Should I Choose A GRP Patio Canopy, Or A Canvas Awning?

It is astonishing the difference a patio canopy can make. If you've not experience one yourself you may well feel that a patio canopy is perhaps more about looks than offering any practical benefits, but for the many thousands of people who are enjoying the use of their patio throughout much of the year it is plain to see the advantages.

The trouble with living in the UK is that our weather is at best unpredictable and at worst disastrous. In the few days when the weather behaves itself you may well be tempted to grab the chairs and the iced juice, dash outside to your patio and sit there determined to enjoy every single minute of it.

However, this is not always convenient, and you can be fairly assured that the one sunny dry day when you could actually enjoy your patio is the one day you are otherwise occupied and can't get out to see it. For the vast majority of the year your patio is merely something to look at gloomily through the window, imagining what it must be like to actually be able to use all that extra space you're supposed to have.

Having a patio canopy installed can make a huge difference to the way you feel about your home and garden because, in effect, it provides you with the feeling of having an additional room for a much greater proportion of the year.

Patio canopies are available in a wide range of sizes and designs, and it may be that all you require is the opportunity for a little additional shade during the blazing hot summers we all dream about. But for many people a patio canopy is less about sheltering from the sun and more about sheltering from drizzle, rain, and even wind to a surprising extent. A patio which opens onto a garden is a beautiful feature, and one that can really be enjoyed for a significant portion of the year.

Being able to sit out in the evening, take lunch during the day, entertain friends or simply sit with a coffee and a magazine enjoying the fresh air and the sound of birds doing whatever birds do can make a big difference to your sanity. Not to mention the benefits of fresh air, although we dare say the coffee and doughnuts probably negates these advantages - but that's not really the point.

The point of a patio canopy is to give you choice, and to provide you with the ability to make far more use of your patio during the days and the evenings for a very much greater period of time throughout the year. As most modern patio canopies are made from glass reinforced polyester, otherwise referred to as GRP or fibreglass, there are few worries regarding long term care and maintenance.

Material canopies need to be regularly washed and cared for, and often suffer from mildew, eventually becoming unsightly and weak, often tearing. Wooden canopies are heavy and require extensive work to hold them in place, after which you will regularly have to recoat them to ensure the wood is protected. Should any moisture manage to find its way into the wood then the cold weather will soon see it freezing, expanding and cracking the wood, causing it to flake, split or crack.

However, GRP patio canopies need virtually no maintenance and will last for many, many years, looking every bit as good as when they were first installed. Simply give a patio canopy a quick wipe with a wet cloth once in a while or, if you're feeling really lazy, just point the hose at it - but make sure the patio doors are closed first!

During the early spring and autumn, and even during the summer, trying to plan an evening with friends can mean assuming that the weather will be poor and staying inside. But by having a patio canopy you are once again given a choice, and can usually plan to make use of your outside space. If you have a garden then you may very well prefer to enjoy sitting, eating or drinking whilst surveying your plot rather than staring at the walls.

Many people avoid patio canopies because they are concerned about the expense and the trouble of having one fitted. Whilst this may be true with either canvas or wooden canopies or awnings, it is not the case for GRP patio canopies and roofs. GRP is extremely lightweight, and the patio canopy is manufactured to be a precise fit, and then brought to your property and fitted - often by just one or two contractors who will have the job completed so quickly you'll barely have time to make the cucumber sandwiches and iced tea.
