Getting away from it all needn''t mean a long flight to a far flung place at the world''s end, or to a place where culturally it''s far removed from what you find comfortable. Many of us like to take our holiday''s a bit closer to home, if we can ignore the fact that the climate may well be perhaps more challenging.

Weather speculation aside, everybody knows Britain and Ireland have plenty of history, architecture, scenery and entertainment to offer. The locations are easy to reach and airport travel can be avoided as it''s far less stress so it''s about time we took a look at places not so far away to appreciate and enjoy. Here''s some places for your consideration.

Bath is the perfect place for a break with it''s magnificent Georgian streets and unique places of interest. Visit the impressive Pulteney Bridge with it''s shops or the world renowned Roman Baths. Bath is a World Heritage Site and is the perfect size for exploring by foot as you get to see the likes of the famous Royal Crescent and the Circus.

Edinburgh is not just essential to visit during festival time. The famous castle''s elevation offers stunning 360 degree views. Arthur''s Seat in Holyrood Park also offers a vast panorama but if it''s hospitality you''re looking for then there are countless restaurants and public houses catering for all tastes, always offering a very friendly service.

Cities are all well and good but the lanscape to be discovered in the Lake District presents some of England''s most jaw dropping scenery. There are hundreds of miles of unspoilt empty lakes and mountains. Lots of churches and quiant villages are to be found, along with inns of character and restaurants all serving exemplary homemade locally sourced meals.

Dublin is the place to go for a local brew in a real pub where you can also go and tour the Guiness factory or visit a distillery. The distinctive Georgian architecture provides ample backdrop to your walks between museums, including the Writer''s Museum, which houses pieces and artefacts originating from Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and James Joyce. A culturally rich city offering lots to do and excellent friendly service.

London is less a city and more a global super city offering more than can possibly be discovering on one short trip. Museum''s, gallery''s, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, a river boat trip are just a few of the things to do. Spitalfields near Brick Lane is a must for the spectacle, and also Portobello Road, for the clothes and the curiosities.

Short breaks closer to home are a must for those odd weekends where you''ve earned it and want to just effortlessly slip away on a small journey to a different place. Be it the countryside for peace, or into a bigger city for the hustle and bustle, there''s plenty to do and see.
