Shipping Vehicles

The kind of shipping vehicles your chosen auto hauler will use depends on the type of vehicles they are moving. Your vehicle may be hauled in a large closed trailer, an open trailer, or on a simple truck or trailer. If you are sending your car to another country, it may spend the shipment in a freight container. A closed transport vehicle is preferred since it's safer and your vehicle won't be exposed to weather and stones or debris kicked up by other vehicles. But open trailers are usually cheaper, depending on the company you choose. Your main concern is the security and safety of the vehicle you are shipping. Be sure to speak to your mover in-depth regarding their methods of transport, and how they will protect your vehicle.

Before you select a company for shipping vehicles, check to be sure they have insurance, and ask just how fully you are protected as far as your vehicle is concerned. Speak with your own insurance company, too, to determine if they cover your vehicle in transport. Look for restrictions and exclusions in both policies, to be sure you're as fully covered as you can be. This will avoid any unwanted surprises if the hauler is involved in an accident.
Read the terms of your hauling company's contracts carefully, before you sign on the dotted line. You might want to add a rider to your own insurance policy to make sure you are fully covered.

Once you choose a reputable auto shipper to haul your vehicle, you'll want to prepare your car for the trip. Check for any damage your vehicle already has, and note it. You will sign off on the state of the vehicle when it is loaded, and then you or the recipient will recheck it when it arrives at its new location. This paperwork covers both you and the shipping company. Wash your vehicle before shipping, so it's easy to see any damage it has, even if it's minor. Check with your shipping company to make sure you've done everything you need to do, before the vehicle is picked up.

Be sure you empty your personal possessions out of the vehicle before it is hauled. This includes things stored in the trunk. Most shipping companies will not accept responsibility for the loss or damage of your personal things.

Make sure all the fluid levels in your car are full, and that your battery is securely in place. Only leave a quarter tank or less of gas in your car, to avoid the hauler having to pay for excess weight fees when the truck stops at weigh stations. If your vehicle is customized, remove anything that isn't permanent. Turn off your vehicle alarms, and give the hauler the keys so that the car can be moved when needed. Then prepare to meet your vehicle (or call the person who will meet it) at the other end of the line.
