I love vacationing at Sherkston Shores so much that I could spend a week there without ever leaving the park. There is, however, so much to do nearby that I never remain close to the cottage for long. In this part of the series, we'll visit a few of those attractions.

One of the bloodiest battles of the War of 1812 took place about eight miles from Sherkston Shores at Fort Erie. Today, Old Fort Erie stands as a living reminder of the over 3,000 troops killed or injured in the British siege of the fort in August and September, 1814. The Battle at Fort Erie was a key to the survival of the infant United States. Stop and see the buildings and monuments that stand in its honor. Fort Erie is open every day from 10:00 to 5:00 starting early in May and continuing through early October. It will cost you $9.25 Canadian to get in. If you're lucky enough to be in the area on August 8th and 9th, be sure to attend Old Fort Erie's annual Siege Weekend. Here you can watch actors re-create the battles that took place during the deadly siege..

Have you ever wondered how giant cargo ships make it back and forth between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie? Unless the ships can somehow go over Niagara Falls, there has to be another route. The answer is the 27 mile long Welland Canal that exits Lake Erie at Port Colborne and empties into Lake Ontario at Port Weller. There is a series of eight locks along the way that lower or raise the vessels by about 325 feet. It takes about 15 minutes to drive from Sherkston Shores to Port Colborne so you can take your picnic basket and eat your lunch in the beautiful park that overlooks lock number 8. If you're lucky, you'll see a massive cargo vessel passing through the lock. In fact, on a clear day, you can watch a ship arrive at Port Colborne from the beach at Sherkston Shores and have plenty of time to jump in your car, drive to Port Colborne and watch the same ship go through the lock. I've watched many ships make this trip and I never get sick of it. There are two cool old drawbridges that open and close as the ships pass through Port Colborne. While you're in Port Colborne, you can enjoy a restaurant meal, replenish your fishing bait or have some dessert among lots of other things.

Do you like car racing? If you are, you should check out Humberstone Speedway in nearby Gasport. This 3/8 mile dirt track races every Sunday evening from May through September. The top division is the Sportsman Modifieds and the more powerful 358 Small Block Modifieds make a couple appearances a month. Make sure you get there before practice and watch the street stocks slip and slide all over the place as they prepare the track for the races. I've never seen this ritual at any other track and I have to say that it's hysterical. Humberstone Speedway is less than 15 minutes from Sherkston Shores so be sure to give it a try.

In my next article, we're going to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake. Once you know about it, you're going to want to spend a a day there. Have I told you yet that Sherkston Shores is only half an hour from Niagara Falls? I've hung out at the Falls many times and I know all the things you're going to want to see. After two articles about Niagara-on-the-Lake, and continuing until I finish, I'm going to tell you about may favorite things to see in Niagara Falls. Keep watching because I'm even going to tell you how to save some money on parking.
