When choosing a shampoo, the average consumer usually considers three simple factors; price, smell and what appearance the product offers ones hair. How soft, silky and shiny it will make hair look, as well as how thick and healthy the hair will appear are the most common concerns among consumers. Ingredients are a highly overlooked factor when choosing hair products for most, and what the average consumer does not realize, is the average shampoo might have extreme long term effects.

Manufacturers of commercial hair products have hired clever advertisers to market their products and have produced campaigns in an effort to condition consumers to think a certain way and desire nearly impossible and idealistic outcomes. Companies spend millions of dollars on these campaigns in order to tell the potential customer all of the wonderful benefits their shampoos have to offer. Reading the ingredients list on their shampoo bottle before purchasing it is the exact opposite reaction they want their potential customers to have.

The majority of shampoos, conditioners and hair products not only in grocery stores and pharmacies but also in salons, contain ingredients that have been proven to have harmful effects on the body. Many products contain known cancer causing agents while others have long term affects on a person's body and may even harm a baby in the mother's womb.

Scientists have proven that external care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, lotions, cosmetics and even perfume contains ingredients which can be absorbed through the body's pores into the bloodstream. Many shampoos which contain cancer-causing chemicals also contain penetration enhancers which increase the amount of the ingredients which are absorbed into the body. In addition, there are other ingredients in hair care products which also have a negative impact on the body. Endocrine disrupting substances (EDS) for example, such as triclocarban are widely used in household products as well as shampoos and conditioners and can create a hormone imbalance within the body.

In order to become a well educated consumer and increase product awareness, one must make a habit of reading the ingredients on the back of the bottle first. Also learn to ignore all the wonderful benefits the manufacturer claims for their product, and do not believe what is written in advertisements and on television or the internet.

On all products sold in the United States, manufacturers are required by law to list the ingredients on the package. While this may seem like a step in the right direction, some manufacturers have found ways to hide some of the worst ingredients. Some companies will place the ingredients on a small sticker label on the bottom of the bottle, and will have it printed in a type size so small it can only be viewed under a magnifying glass.

While most companies employ clever techniques to hide ingredients from consumers, not all do. Trivani International, for example is a personal care company which formulates 100% safe products for hair, skin, oral health and other important items. They have a do no harm philosophy and actually market their ingredients as benefits! Trivani Nourishing Shampoo, is designed with Capispheres which naturally bind to hair, revitalizing and strengthening the hair long after it has been washed. Their unique formula will not only help reduce static and retain moisture in the hair, leaving it softer, healthier, and more manageable, it is also free from all harmful chemicals and substances.
