Say it with flowers

Flowers are arguably the best multipurpose gifts available: although they aren''t lasting presents, they can get a message across much better than words can at times, as well as offering you the perfect blank canvas if you''re just looking for a small token of gratitude and companionship.

One of their fascinating properties, of course, is their seasonal variation, giving each few months something new to look forward to. You won''t find the same selection on your local flower vendor''s stall now during the height of the summer months as you may have when spring was arriving, encouraging you to develop your tastes accordingly.

Summer flowers are among the most beautiful ones available, and although the dahlia isn''t native to Britain, it''s still among the best of the season. There''s a huge list of thirty six different strains of the plant, but what they do have in common (even if they come in many colours) is the lovely way in which the countless tiny petals bloom out delicately from the centre.

Ethiopia produces some incredibly attractive flowers as well, as is clear with the wonderful and understated calla lily. Its rich white petals couch a small yellow stamen, and the combination of these two gentle and subtle colours makes it a perfect summertime household gift.

Although they span much of the period from mid-spring well into the beginning of autumn, foxgloves are excellent seasonal flowers. Available in different shades, including yellow and purple, the popularity of foxgloves shows that British wild flowers can hold their own on stalls around the country next to grander specimens from Holland or elsewhere.

It may surprise people to hear that geraniums, among the most common garden flowers to be found in Britain, are in fact native to the Mediterranean rather than the UK. Still, it is certainly a flower worth cultivating or getting hold of, as they way it can light up a garden or a front room in summer is truly marvellous.

Although they might follow seasonal trends to a certain extent, online retailers don''t have to be confined to seasonal limitations in any substantial sense, as they have the capability to mail order flowers to anyone from many places around the world in a way that independent street vendors may not.

Nevertheless, if you want to get your hands on some crisp lilies or dahlias which are currently in bloom, there''s no better place to go than your local floral shop or stand, as nothing can really compare with the freshness of summer flowers that have just been picked from nurseries here in the UK.
