The beginning of the menstrual cycle is considered a rite of passage for females, changing young girls into young women. Unfortunately, this rite of passage is generally not without discomfort. Each month, without pregnancy, the uterus sheds its lining and as a result a majority of women experience menstrual cramps period. As the old lining begins the breaking down process a compound noted as prostaglandins is discharged into the body which causes the muscles to contract, blocking the air supply, which subsequently causes the break down and death of the tissue. The actual menstrual cramps period pain is intensified as pieces of uterine lining tissue or clots pass through the cervix.
The first, and probably most common home remedy for bad period cramps is heat. Applying a heating pad, hot water bottle, or taking a warm bath, can help soothe, and relax the uterine contractions causing the pain. Leaving the heating pad, or hot water bottle on for 15-30 minutes at a time, is optimal. You should never put a heated bottle, or pad directly on bare skin, always have a barrier so the skin does not burn. You can place it on your lower abdomen, or on your back depending on where your pain is located.
Pms syndrome plagues most women with some degree of stomach pain. One reliable remedy that women have turned to for centuries is the healing power of heat. A hot water bottle, a microwaveable pack or a heat patch can be directly applied to the stomach to alleviate cramps during pms syndrome. These items may all be purchased at any local drugstore.
Having someone gently massage the area, can also relax the contractions taking place in the uterus. Warm lotion, or warm oil, will add to the relief you get from the massage. By adding massage, and heat together, you get two remedies in one. If you do not have anyone who can give you a massage, there are over the counter massagers with heat that you can buy, and use yourself. I personally have used these, and I find them to work quite wonderful.
Queen Victoria did some groundbreaking and controversial research on the efficacy of marijuana use to help ease the pain associated with menstruation cramps. The queen's personal physician sought out the herb and did a series of studies and concluded that marijuana can play an important role in eliminating the pain of menstruation cramps. Smoking the herb seems to relax the sufferer and eliminate the pain. This research has been verified by modern scientists; but marijuana is illegal in most places so this solution is not available to most women. Nonetheless, many women risk arrest and seek to procure the 'weed' in their desperation to find relief from their monthly menstruation cramps.
