When the heat strikes, what do you do to live comfortably while saving money and energy? To handle the heat some people just turn on the air conditioner and leave it on constantly. There are other ways to keep the heat at bay too. However, for starters, it is a good idea to make sure that your cooling unit won't come on while you are not home. It will be less wear and tear on your system if you turn it down when you get home.

Your air conditioner has to turn on every time your home heats up to remove the heat. If you just turn it on when you get home it will only have to do that once thereby saving yourself lots of energy and money. This also applies to ceiling fans because even though they make you feel cooler they don't really cool the air they just blow it away from your body. So it does no good to leave them on when you aren't there. Instead, switch them on when you get home, and in no time you'll be feeling better.

There are many other ways that have been proven to be helpful in reducing any inside heat. You can use reflective film on your windows, and replace your lighting with fluorescent bulbs. Using a microwave for your cooking, and making sure your doors and windows are sealed correctly are other good things to do. If you are worried about the heat in your home and office, you might want to contact a commercial heating contractor to evaluate your home or business to see what needs to be done to cool them down.

Heating contractors have your best interests in mind. They may suggest that using your blinds or drapes to block out the sunlight is also very helpful. This is due to the fact that the more heat that enters your home the more it has to be removed. Drapes have been found to be more effective than blinds in effectively reducing heat, along with the installation of ceilings fans in several rooms.

In order to utilize your air conditioner to its fullest it is important to consider purchasing one that has a built-in timer for your central unit or a plug-in one for any window units. They should be set to turn off when you leave your home and turn on about 30 minutes before you arrive back home. The setting on your air conditioner should be somewhere around 78 degrees but the higher you go the more money you save.

To achieve the appropriate temperature in your home you might even need to call a heating contractor to see if you need a new air conditioning and heating system. You may need to install an alternative system such as a mini-split system with an outside condenser that runs directly into each room. Or you could do simple things like clean the filter, check to see if the capacity is appropriate, ensure that your condenser is in a cool location, or add a window unit to cool just one room. It is true than an air conditioner will cool down the temperature quickly but you should think before simply flicking the switch.
