Definition of a Safelist

A safelist is a group of marketers who send their marketing messages to one another. When you're a member of a safelist, you will regularly send your email marketing letters to all members of the safelist. In exchange you will receive all their marketing messages. If you're just starting out and don't have your own mailing list safelists are a good place to start. Have your own list? Safelists can still can be a profitable addition to your overall email marketing campaigns.

Pros

First and foremost it's a safe way to get your email campaigns out to a big market totally without spamming. When you sign up for the safelist you must double opt in to receive group emails. This means that you are not spamming when sending to these groups. Additionally even if someone THINKS your email is spam, they are unable to turn you in for it. They don't even have your email address; only that of the safelist's mail servers. This advantage is the very reason for the term "safelist."

A second big advantage is that safelists are loosely targeted to small business owners. In general these are the ones who have not yet achieved the kind of success where they have unlimited advertising budgets. So if you're selling items or information to businesses, this is your audience. Safelists are somewhat less effective for more specialized products, but if your target market is online marketers, safelists are one place where the new ones gather.

When Should I Stop Using Safelists?

Never! Where else can you find such a large group of marketers who would be interested in what you have to sell? These are exactly the kind people you want to have on your own email marketing list. Yeah, there are certain bragging rights to have a famous marketing guru on your list, but realistically, what would such an expert ever buy from you? He/she probably already has everything. And what they don't have, they'll make it themselves. They don't need you like the newbies do.

Use safelists like the pros still do -- to begin building your own mailing list. You can do this by giving away free information in exchange for joining your mailing list. Make sure it's something valuable. An eBook with nothing new in it may get a new member your list, but your chances of keeping that name there aren't so good. But if you've really given good tips that a newbie could use to reduce his costs he'll follow you for a good long time.

Do the Big Guys Use Safelists?

Many gurus started with safelists as their primary marketing vehicle. Mike Filsaime has spoken in seminars of how he grew his first list to 7000 members only using safelists. This was the list that started him on his spectacular career. Indeed he and many other expert marketers still use safelists. The only difference is that, unlike you and me, they probably hire people to do the clerical aspects of this task.

Don't believe those who say safelists don't work. Safelists can be effective if used correctly. All online marketers, new or experienced, should use safelists as an effective part of their overall email campaign.
