Only too frequently we ignore pain and carry on regardless. We all have aches and pains every now and again and most of us just carry on with life without giving it any thought. If we stopped work every time we ached the country would soon grind to a stop.

But don't ignore shoulder pain, especially if it is fairly consistent. A Rotator Cuff Problem will|Rotator Cuff problems} often give us plenty of warning before they get bad and bring us to a stop. If you notice weakness, stiffness, swelling or pain in one or both of yoru shoulders it may be time to take it easy and start the healing process.

Although some shoulder problems begin as the result of a fall or knock, the vast majority begin because of simple |wear and tear on the shoulder, either as we get older or caused by a repetitive movement. Alright, You can't always do anything to stop an accidental shoulder injury but we prevent the damage from wear and tear. As we get older our rotator cuff gets weaker through lack of exercise. We carry our bodies differently to how we did when we were younger, our {posture|shape gradually changes with time. I only need to look at my waist to confirm that.

As the rotator cuff gradually gets weaker we become prone to shoulder injuries. The right sort of physical therapy done early on to strengthen these muscles can go a long way towards preventing shoulder injuries. Although these are a small group of muscles {they are key to having strong shoulders and once we get past forty five we ignore them at our peril.

So prevention is better than cure, but if you've left it too late, what are the rotator cuff symptoms? Firstly, pain and weakness in the damaged joint. This might only occur when you are using the shoulder. The commonest causes of pain are reaching for an object or reaching up. Whenever you reach up or out the muscles of the rotator cuff starts to work at its hardest. If you are having problems getting to sleep because of a painful shoulder, this is yet another classic sign. Lying on your bad shoulder can be painful, but lying on the good side so that your painful arm drops in front of you can be equally uncomfortable.

If the pain is continuous, it may be a sign of a badly torn cuff.

Most rotator cuff problems can be sorted out with rest followed by gentle shoulder specific exercise but don't rush out and start lifting weights. These are a small group of muscles that need very specific exercise to strengthen them using no weights or at best very small weights and exercises that are designed specifically for group of muscles.

Depending on whether it's simply shoulder pain or a rotator cuff tear, you will usually end up exercising the muscles of the rotator cuff as part of your recovery programme.
