Reverse osmosis is one of the most popular methods of water filtration in the home. By forcing water through a membrane with very tiny holes, reverse osmosis water filters removes minerals, impurities and other solids that can’t pass through the membrane.

To find out how reverse osmosis got its name, you must first look at osmosis, which is a process through which water with low levels of content (minerals, solids, etc.) passes across a membrane, without the use of additional energy, into water with higher levels of content. Eventually the water on both sides of the membrane has similar levels of content. In contrast, the reverse osmosis process forces water with high content through a membrane so the water on the other side has lower content. While reverse osmosis filters remove many solids, some microorganisms can be small enough to pass through the membrane, so reverse osmosis does not disinfect water. Another potential problem that could lead to contaminated water being passed through a reverse osmosis filter is leaks or tears in the membrane, which would allow water to pass through the filter without being treated.

However, if your water comes from a well or some other private supply, it should be tested before using a reverse osmosis filter or it should be put through a disinfecting filter first. Depending on the amount of contaminants contained in the incoming water, reverse osmosis systems might use four or five litres of contaminated water to produce one litre of filtered water. The result is that flow rates from reverse osmosis are relatively low compared to some other water filtration methods. The implication for anyone using a reverse osmosis water filter is that if they require large amounts of water on an ongoing basis, they will need some sort of storage system to accumulate sufficient amounts of filtered water to meet their peak demands.

Reverse osmosis is so effective at removing solids from water, it is perhaps the best water filtration method for removing unwanted minerals from your water. It is effective is removing total dissolved solids, turbidity, asbestos, lead, other heavy metals, radium and some dissolved organics. Its ability to remove solids is why reverse osmosis is used so extensively in water desalination processes.
