Resveratrol & quercetin Advantages: Myths and Facts

Resveratrol is in the news a lot these days, but not as many people have heard about quercetin - another powerful compound that some researchers think might be a contributing partner in resveratrol's seemingly inevitable abilities as a powerful health agent. Like resveratrol, quercetin is derived from plants. Foods that are naturally abundant in quercetin contain onions, cranberries, red grapes, tomatoes, citrus fruit, broccoli, capers, and dark, leafy green vegetables. A study reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry entitled "Ten-Year Comparison of the Influence of Organic and Conventional Crop Management Practices on the Content of Flavonoids in Tomatoes" noted that organic tomatoes had 79% more quercetin than those that were conservatively grown. And it is well known that a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables can help prevent certain cancers

Quercetin has also shown potent anti-cancer activity. Quercetin has "been shown to inhibit the growth of cells derived from human and animal cancers, such as leukemia and Ehrlich ascites tumors, the estrogen receptor-positive breast carcinoma , squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck origin, gastric cancer and colon cancer, as well as human leukemia cells in culture. Quercetin has antiproliferative activity against breast and stomach cancer cell lines and human ovarian cancer primary cultures.

A new in vitro study indicates that resveratrol and quercetin reduce fat accumulation in adipocytes (fat cells).Results specified that resveratrol and quercetin, when given to the fat cells separately, each suppressed fat accumulation in maturing pre-adipocytes by 9 to 15 percent respectively. The combination of resveratrol and quercetin decreased lipid accumulation in the fat cells by more than 68 percent Taken together, our data specify that combinations of resveratrol and quercetin can apply potential anti-obesity effects by inhibiting differentiation of pre-adipocytes and inducing apoptosis of mature adipocytes

We conclude that resveratrol, resveratrol quercetin or a combination of resveratrol and quercetin, in concentrations equivalent to that present in red wines, are useful inhibitors of oral squamous carcinoma cell (SCC-25) growth and proliferation, and warrant further investigation as cancer chemopreventive agents.
