Reglan Should Be Taken Cautiously

According to the FDA, the drug called Reglan has been found to cause severe side effects including a very serious condition called tardive dyskinesia. This is a serious condition that causes abnormal muscle movements especially in the facial muscles. Most experts agree that the damage is irreversible, and even when a patient stops taking the drug, the unfortunate results are permanent.

Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by the following symptoms.

- Repetitive lip smacking, grimacing, and chewing

Though rare, Reglan can also cause Parkinsonism and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome or NMS. This is characterized by high fever, stiff muscles, an uneven heart beat, and profuse sweating. In some severe cases the result is death. Usage of Reglan should be discontinued as soon as any of these symptoms are manifested.

Also tell your doctor and obtain medical help as soon as possible. Before taking any Reglan, your doctor should be informed about any diseases you've had in the past and any you are presently suffering from. The doctor should also know precisely what medications the patient has been prescribed. Also while you are taking Reglan, do not take any other medicine without consulting your doctor first.

Reglan should be avoided if the patient has any of the following conditions.

- Has an allergic reaction to the drug

- Is taking other drugs for mental illness

- Suffers seizures or epilepsy

- Has high blood pressure

- Suffers from kidney or liver problems

- Has diabetes or diabetic symptoms

- Is pregnant or breast feeding
