In the UK, as in most of Europe, cardboard, plastic and paper is usually recycled in specified cardboard, plastic or paper bins or taken away in bales. The larger producers of cardboard, plastic or paper waste tend to find it more economical to use a baler. This is much cheaper than using bins whether exclusively for say "cardboard" or bins for mixed general waste.

New Legislation in the UK, which is similar to the whole of Europe, states that producers of waste, must sort and segregate waste, to prevent as much reusable waste from going to landfill. If businesses can sort, segregate and remove large amounts of their cardboard, plastic, paper and other waste types, this will reduce a very large quantity of waste being sent to landfill. This means fewer landfill requirements in the long-term, therefore making an improved impact on the environment.

The method of baling or compacting all the waste materials has many benefits. By compacting the cardboard for example, it takes up much less space. Cardboard boxes are full of air. A baler will crush, flatten and remove all the air from the waste. Cardboard can be reduced to approximately 1/10th of its volume. Plastic volumes can be reduced by huge amounts. Bales can be stacked neatly outside in all weather and are not a fire hazard. They are much less likely to be combustible than a bin full of loose cardboard. Basically, the cardboard, plastic or paper bins can be removed. The rental cost of the baler should be lower than the cost of the bins. As long as the rental of the baler is cheaper than the bin rental and collection fees, then the baler is definitely going to be advantageous.

As we are compacting waste greatly, and storing it neatly outside, the waste can be collected much less frequently. Instead of large gas-guzzling dustbin lorries making weekly or bi-weekly collections, the bales can be collected much less often. Usually every 2 to 4 weeks. Collections of the baled waste would also normally be free of charge.

The collector of the baled waste would normally take it somewhere local where he can claim some form of revenue. Cardboard is not worth a lot. An average UK value for small cardboard bales is about £35 per ton. Mill Size cardboard bales may be worth about £55 per ton and collected from clients site. Plastic is usually worth considerably more, although it takes a very large amount of plastic to make a ton. The best type of plastic is clear shrink-wrap. This can be worth approximately £140 to £200 per ton, depending where you are in the country. As soon as you start baling black and other colours with your shrink-wrap, the recyclable value of your bale reduces dramatically. So for the sake of a few black bags, it’s advisable to remove the coloured plastic and keep your plastic bales to be only clear shrink-wrap.

We're looking at great reductions of waste going to landfill, lower charges than the traditional bin method of removing waste, less vehicles on the road, free collection charges and possible revenues.

When people consider having a baler, they don’t really know the best size or type of baler for them. It’s best to get some good advice and help from someone who knows what they are doing.

There’s two main types of balers on the market. Air-balers and hydraulic-balers. I have worked with both types equally and I conclude that hydraulic balers make better bales, are safer, more economical and more mechanically sound.
