As free radicals enter the body, they impose themselves on other molecules. Unstable oxygen atoms are otherwise known as free radicals. You may recall, from your attendance at college, an atom has a nucleus constituted of protons and neutrons, round which electrons circulate. It works very well if the electrons are in pairs, but problems arise when an electron is not paired, as happens with unstable oxygen atoms. They steal electrons from balanced cells and cause a chain reaction that we recognize as oxidation. If left unchecked life-threatening degenerative diseases including heart conditions, and some cancers may develop. We are fortunate indeed to have natural antioxidants to protect us from such health hazards.

Regrettably, the hazard of free radicals is not just from our diets, but also from environmental sources, including industrial fumes, cigarette smoke, and others. It is not possible to evade them all, although an excellent way to protect yourself, is by a practical knowledge of antioxidants. There are scrumptious fruits and vegetables, in plentiful supply, to assist your cause, but you have to make sure that you are getting plenty, by erring towards the top of the recommended consumption, of 9 portions every day.

We are fortunate that antioxidants are readily obtainable to maintain the balance, and clean up any overload of free radicals. It is as easy as ABC. Just think of Apples, Berries, and Cauliflowers, because sought-after antioxidants are contained within the 5 - 9 fruit and vegetables, that you are always being advised to take in your diet. Look upon 5 fruits and vegetables as the lowest common denonimator, because all things being equal, you can get more antioxidant protection against free radicals from 6 - 9 portions than 5! Just as lots of fruits and vegetables have an abundance of antioxidants, there are other foods that don't measure up.

You should bear in mind that although oxidation is a natural physical system that uses nutrients to provide energy, if an excess of free radicals are created, a health risk could develop sooner or later. It has been reported that antioxidants may assist considerably in thwarting age related medical conditions. You should realize it is in your best interests to care for yourself properly, and an antioxidant rich diet, to harmonize with a natural way of living, is a good habit to cultivate. It is to be hoped you will try to do all you can to guard yourself against the possible, but not inevitable, negative effects of time.
