The foremost to successful control of any pest is early revealing of that infestation. If an infestation of mice is detected next control is far easier than it would be in the latter stages.
If one single pregnant female rat gained access to your home and was left undetected, in one single year that female mouse would be responsible for 2000 offspring!
Therefore early discovery is paramount and this coupled with effective use of rodenticides and traps will ensure the plague does not become deep seated into your property.

The rat originated in Central Asia and was reportedly found in the UK as early as the 9th Century. They very are destructive, as they need to constantly gnaw to stop their teeth from growing. They also can carry germs such assalmonella so that is a good reason for killing these pests.
One of the firstclues you will see are their droppings or poo. Each rat will generate up to 40 droppings a day. These are black in colour and around 1cm in length. The rat will always use the same place to tour to the toilet therefore unlike the mouse, rat droppings are frequently found in piles.

An additional indication is the appearance of a 'smear mark' . This is a black grease mark which is made from the natural grease off the rodents fur. The smear mark is caused by the rat using the same trail each spell as it goes out to hunt for food and the layer of grease builds ups over a short period of time. This is also a good signal of where the rats are running. This smear mark can be around the skirting of wall floor junctions or over pipe succeed that is ordinarily used by the rat.

You may also start to see the build up of urine trails. A regular myth is that rats are incontinent - They are not! Rats constantly urinate as they move to mark out area and food trails. This urine builds up over time to for a yellow trail which smells.

The colour of a brown rat can vary greatly from brown to grey black Its tail is slightly shorter than the length of their head and body combined. Rats reach sexual maturity after 10-12 weeks and the average size of their litter is 7-8 young
Each rat needs to munch through only 30g of food per day to live. Unlike mice, rats need to drink around 60ml of fluid per day. So if you have any dripping outdoor taps of containers full of rain water in your garden next this will generate a water source for the rats to exist off.

In the wild their average life expectancy is around 12 months but they can subsist for much longer periods in your land as they have all they need in terms of warmth, shelter and food. Each mouse needs to eat only 3g of food per day to live. This is comparable to just a few crumbs!

Now you have recognized that it is rats, then comes the control. First estimate the size of the population by the number of droppings. This will give a good sign of the extent of the problem. In domestic properties the usual entry points are under doors and through gaps around pipe succeed under sink units. An adult rat is capable of entering through a gap of around 10mm.
Check all doors and incoming pipe work for gaps greater than 6mm. Fit a brush strip to the outside edge of doors with gaps. Close any hole you find with a coarse grade wire wool. Do not use expanding foam to bung hole as rats can clearly chew through this.

1. Use poisons in safe areas away from children and animals. Pre baited rat stations are ideal in a domestic house as they offer a potent poison in a tamper resistant box. You can also use whole wheat bait or paste formulations, which can be placed in attach bait points.

2. If you do not want to use poisons, then use a multicatch metal exist catch traps or snap traps. Place a broken chocolate biscuit in the trap to boost its effectiveness. These traps can be reused and have proven effective over several years. If using snap traps, place them at 90? to the wall floor junction.

3. For true chemical free control of your problem, use an Ultrasonic Deterrent
A recipe of all three methods of control will give the best results.
