Paul is the son of Rep. Ron Paul, the longtime Texas Republican who ran for president on a platform that included abolishing the Internal Revenue Service and getting out of Iraq. In an interview over the weekend, Rand Paul told Politics Daily's Walter Shapiro that Sarah Palin was a factor in his surge. "For a year, we've been working to define the race as the conservative outsider versus the moderate insider. She helped cement that dynamic in the race," he said.

On Tuesday night, Paul said his victory is also a huge victory for the Tea Party movement and sends the message "that we're unhappy and that we want things done differently." McConnell, meanwhile, congratulated Paul on an impressive campaign and said that "now Kentucky Republicans will unite in standing against" Obama's policies.

But Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine wasted no time in labeling the Paul victory a rebuke of GOP leaders in Washington -- and an advantage for Democrats this fall. wedding dresses He called the race "a show of weakness for the minority leader, and in a race that symbolized the fight over the heart and soul of the Republican Party, Rand Paul overcame McConnell's handpicked candidate by a large margin. Unfortunately for Republicans, ordinary Americans are unlikely to be receptive to extreme candidates like Rand Paul in the general election this November."

Paul will face either Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo or Attorney General Jack Conway, who were battling it out Tuesday in a Democratic primary.

In Pennsylvania, Specter had backing from President Obama and other top Democrats. But Rep. Joe Sestak gained enough ground against Specter in the last couple of weeks that the race turned into a cliffhanger. And, a runoff appeared possible in Arkansas, where polls showed Lt. Gov. Bill Halter keeping Lincoln below 50 percent.

Both parties were also closely watching a special congressional election in Pennsylvania for what it tells them about their prospects this fall. The race to complete the late Rep. John Murtha's term pitted Republican businessman Tim Burns against Democrat Mark Critz, a top Murtha aide based in Johnstown.

A Burns win would demonstrate that the "enthusiasm gap" -- poll findings that Republicans are more motivated to vote this year -- is a real phenomenon that can produce victory. A Republican loss in the district, the only one in the country that switched from Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race to Republican John McCain in 2008, would suggest better than expected prospects for Democrats in the mid-term House and Senate elections.

The Republican front-runners for Senate nominations in Arkansas and Pennsylvania were Rep. John Boozman and former Rep. Pat Toomey, respectively. Boozman is a rancher and ophthalmologist whose late brother, Fay Boozman, lost to Lincoln in 1998. Toomey, former president of the anti-tax Club for Growth, almost ousted Specter in the 2004 GOP primary, when Specter was a Republican. Polls suggest Democrats in both states would have an uphill climb against Boozman and Toomey. Filed Under: Senate, Rep
