Digital Audio Broadcasting is a radio transmission technology that uses digital signalling instead of the standard analog FM or AM for broadcasting. The concept took its roots in 1980 and over time has reached over one thousand stations being transmitted around the planet. The Pure PocketDAB is probably the best selling digital audio broadcasting DAB radio that fits into the pocket. The wonderful sound quality packed into a compact 123gms unit and the supplied good quality headphones has earned a five star award from the What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision magazine. The system manages to impress not only due to the glorious audio quality but also due to the beauty and manner with which it is crafted.

Once switched on, the PocketDAB 1500 will scan for all of the DAB channels, and then you have 10 preset channels to choose between. Otherwise you have to cycle thru all of the available stations - the PocketDAB located 31 in central London.

The other controls simply cycle thru menu options like re-scanning for stations, or switching thru the diverse info streams such as date and time, information rate, signal quality, and current programme outline. There are three rows on the display, which is mono but backlit with an orange light. But the most important change of all is the price, it is now even more compelling.

There are less expensive pocket digital radios available, but they are not likely to match the PocketDAB 1500 for either reception or audio quality. If you listen to the 1500 each day then it's definitely good value. The inclusion of a chargeable lithium polymer battery is also a sensible step forwards.

When using the PocketDAB you may become conscious of buildings and dense trees, as these regularly cause break up the signal or even shrieking. Against a quality CD player it's disheartening, but in comparison to Radio five Live Medium Wave, it will make you quite happy for sure. The Sennheiser MX300 headphones are excellent quality for included earphones, and are actually adequate for listening to music or commentary when on the go. Unlike its predecessor you also now have the choice of listening to FM radio - just press the DAB / FM shortcut button on the unit - but it is a last resort. In the office, we found that reception was weak, and when we were outside we found that we tended to to switch to DAB if at all possible.

Pure Digital have incorporated a battery charger in the unit with the Pure PocketDAB 1500 and it took five and a half hours to recharge the 1500 from empty. Over the course of 2 weeks it provided around 20 hours of listening on a single charge - very good compared to the 5 hours we generally managed to achieve from the PocketDAB 1000 on its 3 chargeable NiCD batteries. As it is so like the DAB 1000, we also predicted similar reception - not really a bad thing, as we've found the PocketDAB 1000 to be the best pocket DAB radio for DAB reception. However, as anyone that's attempted to listen to digital radio on a train will know, it can be a real pain - with the break up of the signal making you quickly turn it off.

Among the distinct features of the PocketDAB are :
- Classy design with an aluminum case.
- 1500 tuned channels
- Backlit LCD screen.
- 5 Equalizer channels for different sorts of music.
- DC jack for external power supply.
- 20 presets included with the DAB radio.

If you find that you are not happy with the low quality audio of analogue radio then this is your chance to get digital. Enjoy the top quality sound on this pocket sized dynamo of a DAB radio set.
