Purchasing a personal health care coverage

Acquiring a personal healthcare coverage can be a stressful experience for anyone who has always been covered by their company's group plan. I've specialized in helping my clients select good health coverage for well over ten years now and have been a Connecticut insurance broker since the 1980s. I've outlined the steps we use to help our clients find the best policy.

The 3 things we focus on are cost, coverage and the strength of the insurance carrier.

Insurance carrier- Your health insurance carrier should be stable financially and have a good record for paying claims.

Quality of coverage - The health care coverage must meet your needs. It should cover doctors, hospitals, labs plus prescriptions. It should also have physicians and hospitals in their networks that are convenient to your home.

Affordability- Your health plan must be priced fairly relative to the coverage provided.

The basic process we use is to:

Determine which individual or family medical companies are worthy of being considered.

Determine which plans offered by those health carriers offer good coverage

Determine which plans have the lowest overall cost relative to the health insurance coverages provided

Health Insurance Companies

A private health care insurance provider should have good AM Best ratings and be in good standing with your state's insurance department. You may also want to do a Yahoo! search for complaints.

For example search for "Mega Life and Health complaints" before buying a policy from that or any other company. All healthcare carrier has some unhappy customers just by virtue of the volume of clients they have. However, a be warned when there are too many complaints.

Another thing to be concerned with is how much they pay in benefits as a percentage of the premium they take in. A quality health insurance carrier will pay out about 80% of the money they take in to pay for their policyholders' healthcare procedures.

Coverage - What does your medical plan cover?

There are 2 aspects of coverage. One is the treatments that are covered. The second is the network's list of doctors that the insurance plan includes.

Covered Health Care Procedures

Your health care insurance plan should cover you well and the hospital and should have a good lifetime maximum benefit. I suggest at least 5 million dollars of coverage. You should read through your insurance plan's outline of coverage or official brochure to see how doctors, hospitals and prescriptions are covered.

Healthcare Insurance Exclusions and Limitations

Most if not all medical coverage plans will have a list of treatments and services that they won't pay for. Most of the items in this section are reasonable and are included in the policies of their competitors as well. Insurance Plans usually are not designed to cover cosmetic surgery for example. However, there are often exclusions that you will discover in one insurance policy but not in another plan. Maternity insurance is one example of this. Most policies will not cover the costs of a normal pregnancy. The ones that do tend to be more expensive when compared to otherwise similar plans that don't cover pregnancy. The exclusions and limitations section of your policy or its brochure should be read carefully before you commit to purchasing any health care insurance plan.

Health Care Insurance Provider Lists

Knowing which physicians are in your medical insurance plan's network is an issue to address. You might be able to find a list of doctor's who accept a given insurance plan by doing a Google search or by calling your health care insurance agent.

Affordability - Finding the best affordable health coverage

It is easy to compare private health insurance premiums, but it is more difficult to be certain you're getting good value for your money.

Selecting Between Healthcare Insurance Policies

Not until you have crossed the plans on your list that have bad coverage and/or a lousy list of doctors should you start comparing the prices of the plans

The Best Healthcare Insurance Coverage for the Money

The best health insurance coverage, may not be the best plan for you. Often the best plan is overpriced and does not offer an extra dollar in medical benefits for each extra dollar it costs. Make sure that any plan you decide to own is:

Provided by a good medical insurance carrier

Will cover your health care needs well

Is priced well for the health care benefits it provides
