Buying a desktop computer can be a tedious task, however it seems to be alot easier for some than it is for others. Those who have purchased computers in the past already have a good idea of what they need in a brand new computer. However, those who are new to desktop computers could very easily get lost in the huge amount of choices available everywhere.

There is no easy answer to describe what the perfect desktop computer is.

Everyone wants the best computer that will perform most of their tasks for the least amount of money. Of course, simply looking for the best computer when you are out at your local store or on the Internet is a subjective task. Remember that "the best" to one person may be different to another. For simplicity sake, our definition of "the best" computer will consider a number of possible scenarios. Here's a quick list you should consider and why.

1. Always purchase a computer that includes the key peripherals. Most desktop computers consist of four main components. These include CPU, keyboard, display device, and mouse. It is best to purchase a computer that has all of these peripherals included to avoid the frustration of not having the proper components when it's taken home. Assembling your desktop computer is a simple matter of plugging everything in where it belongs. Individual purchases of these components separately should be saved for the more experienced.

2. Decide just what it is that you want to use the computer for. If you simply want to use your new computer for surfing the web, ending/receiving emails, or word-processing and spreadsheet tasks, then the 4 basic components that we described above should be adequate. However, if you are planning on using this desktop computer for more complex tasks, such as multimedia applications, you are going to have to purchase additional items like a scanner, color printer, digital camera and appropriate software. If you want a computer that will assist you in a musical career, you will more than likely need a high-quality microphone and quality speakers.

3. How much money can you afford when it comes to a new computer? You need to create a budget and stick with it. Even though computer prices are going down, you can still end up spending a significant amount of money if you will need to purchase extra accessories as we mentioned earlier. Also, you need to factor in additional costs such as insurance, service contracts and maintenance.

4. Always start out by comparison shopping. Try to look for the biggest and

fastest first. When we say biggest we are referring to memory and hard drive capacity. When we say fastest we are referring to processor speed, modem, BUS speed, etc. Even if you don't think you will need this extra amount of space or the faster components right now, it is important to remember to think about possible future requirements and needs. This strategy helps cut down on costs in the future when you decide on upgrading your system.

5. For the computer novice, It is best to stick with the brand name systems.

Trying to save an extra buck or two by choosing an off-beat brand is better left for those with more computer experience. Even though the brand name may be a little bit more expensive, the beginner will take value in the comfort of knowing that he/she is purchasing a desktop computer from a company with a long standing record of manufacturing quality products. The major brands also have the means available to them for satisfying possible returns of defective products, servicing, and warranties.

6. Where to buy? Once you have an idea of what you want in a new desktop computer and what kind you want, your only job left is selecting the place where you want to buy it from. There are a variety of places available to include online stores, computer outlets, auction sites, local computer stores, or even from a private individual. For the less experienced buyer, we recommend purchasing from a local computer store. In your local computer store, you will have the ability to see the computer you are interested in and to ask questions in-person. You will also have access to in-store warranties, returns, trades, and services.
