Oooh - project management. It is interesting to talk about project management and know about it. Isn’t project management just organizing your little work to get the big work done?. Isn’t project management really just a series of events to create some thing, by some point, way off in some hazy future? Not really.

Defining projects will give us clear picture about project management. A time oriented and result bound activity to accomplish a unique product or service. In practical terms, the goal of a project is to meet the requirements of the mission of the project customers.

A set of activities which are not part of our regular day-to-day works but forms the basis to create something constitute project. The deliverable created by a project is always unique. An example to better understand about project is creating and developing the code for a game software. The manufacturing of the CDs, the Internet delivery, and the technical support you provide to your customers is part of maintenance and operations.

The essential requirements of a projects are budgets, deadlines, and an agreed set of requirements for the deliverable and all these has to be acceptable to the customer.

In my project management seminars I like to say that this point in the room represent our current state; this is where our organization is today. We have some opportunity that we’d like to seize. We have some problem that we’d like to solve. Or there’s technology that has leapfrogged our current equipment so we need to improve our technical attributes. Where we are now is our current state.

Then I’ll stroll to a distant part of the room. This new location represents where we want our organization to get to. This describes our desired future state. Can you imagine how great our organization would be once we reach this destination? Can you imagination the problem solved, the seized opportunity, or the new technology and how it makes our business better? This spot represent our desired future state.

As you know projects are short-term endeavors to create a unique product or service. Projects are out of the normal duties you do as part of your operations. Projects are constrained by time, cost, and scope -- and other constraints such as regulations, resources, or even vendors.

The Iron Triangle of project management posits that all projects are constrained by time, cost, and scope. If one angle of the project is out whack the whole project suffers.

Projects, and technically even project phases, move through five process groups: initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. The success of the project still depends upon the key activities of individual process group. I strongly believe that project planning is vital among other groups. Lapses in proper planning will lead to failure of the project.

A good foundation for how projects are to operate, constraints, project manager’s challenges were discussed in this short introduction to project management. On top of this strong foundation there are nine knowledge.

For now know this: The success of the project entirely depends up on the ability of the project manager to lead, manage, and motivate the project team to complete the project plan in time. The project plan supports the vision the project manager has inherited from the project stakeholders. There should be synchronization of the vision among project manager and project stake holders, otherwise the project will be doomed.

Projects fail at the beginning, not the end.
