PreSeason Training
Is there anything harder in the world than preseason training? OK yes, brain surgery, war, a lot of things. But preseason training is very, very hard – working you to the max physically in an effort to get you up to the optimum fitness for a season of competitive games in your chosen sport.
But there are ways and means of making preseason training easier. It is simply about careful management, of your eating and your rest time.
Eating
Nutrition is one of the major factors that can effect the efficiency of how you train in your preseason efforts. With the right nutrition you are able to recover better, and make better gains from your training.
A lot of people make the mistake of cutting back on the calories to help with weight loss. The issue is that you need calories for energy. Specifically you need quick energy, and slow release energy.
This is where carbohydrates and especially protein comes in. Carbs give a lot of energy per gram, and are vital to our body which get the most energy from carbs. But this energy is often quick release and so you need energy that will also keep you going.
This is the role of protein. Protein gives a slow release of energy and has many other benefits besides. For instance the body finds it very, very difficult to store the energy in protein – and since energy is stored as fat this is great.
Instead as the body breaks the proteins down, which takes time, the energy is slowly released into the blood stream. This gives you energy that is prolonged release – vital for keeping you going all day.
Important for preseason training is also that the protein works during rest. When you muscles are 'building' what is happening is that damage done in exercise is repaired by protein (and if weight lifting etc these gaps that are filled 'grow' the muscles).
