Blackjack is one of the most popular and widely-played casino games in the world, so it stands to reason that it attracts new players all the time. While it is important for these new players to know the rules of the game before they start playing, many people may not realize that there are certain rituals and rules of etiquette that they must follow that can be just as important. Players or spectators who don't understand basic blackjack etiquette can make the game more frustrating than fun for seasoned players and newcomers alike. Here are some basic rules of etiquette that you should be following if you find yourself at a blackjack table:

-If you are a spectator, make sure you are watching from a reasonable distance. Not only can you interfere with the players' concentration, this writer has seen more than once someone being dealt a hand only to reveal that he or she was just watching and not playing. Just remember not to get too close to the table if you don't want to play.

-If you are just learning to play blackjack, it would be wise to learn at a table with few or (preferably) no other players. That way, you can learn the game without slowing things down at a table full of seasoned players.

-Tip the dealer occasionally, especially if you're winning. One common way to tip is to place a bet just outside your betting circle on behalf of the dealer.

-If you're playing a game where the cards are dealt face up, don't touch them. Dealers hate this, and they will tell you to stop if they see you touch your cards. Only touch the cards if you are playing in a face-down game.

-Unless you can do it without spilling, don't drink at the table. If you want to drink, don't order anything when it's your turn and the other players are waiting on you. Most importantly, don't drink to excess and get drunk. Getting drunk and acting like a fool is a surefire way to ruin everyone else's good time.

-Try to keep talking to a minimum. Most players are probably more interested in the game than in chatting with each other; that's why they're there.

-Don't tell other players how to play, and don't correct their mistakes. While it's true that the way other players at the table play can affect the outcome of your hand for better or worse, telling them when they make mistakes is just rude.

-Don't ask the dealer for advice too often, especially when there are other players at the table. This ties into the rule of not playing at a full table when you're just learning how to play.

These are just some of the rules of etiquette that blackjack players are expected to follow whether they're beginners or more advanced. Just remember that etiquette is always important in all social settings, including casino card games.
