Possibilities in the Field in Belmont Betting

There will be no Triple Crown competitor in Belmont Stakes betting, yet it still is a big field of horses on Saturday, June 5th.

There will be horses from the Derby and Preakness in Belmont Stakes odds though neither winner of those competitions will be in the field. It is the 1st time since 2006 since that's occurred.

Belmont Stakes betting will likely like Kentucky Derby second place finisher Ice Box. Also in the field ought to be Preakness second place finisher First Dude. "I think he's going to move forward again," First Dude trainer Dale Romans said. "The mile and a half suits him and we're excited to go up there." One horse that didn't run in either the Derby or the Preakness stakes that might get some serious money in Belmont Stakes betting is Dwyer Stakes winner Fly Down for trainer Nick Zito. Ice Box is Zito's top horse but Fly Down is likely to be a threat. Zito has won the Belmont twice in the past with longshots Birdstone in 2004 and Da' Tara in 2008.

Other wins from Zito's stable are the Champagne Stakes x4, Wood Memorial Stakes x3, Blue Grass Stakes x3 and the Florida Derby x2. In 2005 his stable won over $8 million in purses. The same year, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing And Hall of Fame. As well as training horses, Zito is a National Spokesperson and Honorary Director of the National Horse Protection Coalition.

Velazquez, or "Johnny V", has raced winners in six Breeders Cup competitions, and also in such graded stakes as the Dubai World Cup, Kentucky Oaks, Blue Grass Stakes and E.P. Taylor Stakes. He has raced over 3,000 winners at this time in his career.

The combined efforts of such an excellent trainer and an excellent jockey might make Fly Down a strong force in the forthcoming contest.

"Three weeks is an eternity, for horses," Zito said. "If all goes well over the next three weeks, we hope to have two solid contenders, and I think Ice Box will be a legitimate favorite." Zito might have 3 horses though Jackson Bend isn't likely to run. "I never say never, but I doubt it," Zito said. "I think he needs a rest. But you never know with him - he's very, very, very tough. He wants to fight all the time."

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will not be sending Preakness winner Lookin at Lucky in Belmont Stakes betting but he might have Game On Dude in the competition. He won the Belmont with Point Given in 2001. "I like the Belmont," said Baffert. "It's a long, tough race. When I ran my other horses for the Triple Crown, I had to give them a break. It's tough on them."

Trainer Todd Pletcher is not going to send Derby winner Super Saver or Derby Trial runner-up Aikenite. There is an outside chance he might send Devil May Care in Belmont Stakes odds.

Some horses that will be in Belmont Stakes betting are Blue Grass winner Stately Victor for trainer Mike Maker, Uptowncharlybrown for Kiaran McLaughlin, Stay Put for trainer Steve Margolis, Make Music for Me who was fourth in the Kentucky Derby, Dwyer runner-up Drosselmeyer, Santa Anita Derby and Sham runner-up Setsuko, and Bank the Eight who claimed the Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico.
