The Ion Tailgater portable PA is a pro quality speaker system and can be employed with a variety of inputs. Though designed essentially for the iPhone and the iPod, the speaker may be employed just as easily with musical instruments in addition to mp3 players. Styled to look like a classic electric guitar amp, the Tailgater portable is highly portable and can be employed outside or at a venue just as simply due to it's built in battery. Including an iPod docking station and various inputs the Ion Tailgater Portable is without doubt the complete product.

It has a robust and craggy but portable construction including a carry handle. It is only mono, but most transportable system are too small to really get stereo effects anyway. It has a 2-way speaker design, with a 6" woofer and 1.5 inch 1.5" dome tweeter. The sole real drawback is that it doesn't have any bass adjustment and the normal sound is a bit muddy, but this is changed using the iPods equaliser. As for sound volume, it can get loud. Even out of doors I infrequently go past third of max volume.

The Tailgater is compatible with a large range of musical instruments and mp3 players. Furthermore it is also compatible with CD and DVD players. The amp is designed with multiple inputs for the microphone and other devices and a high quality mic with XLR connector is included with the package.

Another great feature is that it operates on both mains power and the built in rechargeable battery pack. Battery life is stated as being 8 hrs at two thirds volume according to the book. We haven't been able to completely check it yet, but at two thirds volume it ran for over 3 hours and the battery meter still lit up 3 out of four LEDs! So there is no real question that the 8 hour claim is achievable which is great. Recharging takes about 4 hours and there is a handy battery level indicator to display the level of this battery charge.

This excellent piece of kit is an audiophile's fantasy. The heavy duty output and the light but craggy build quality make it an ideal candidate for out of doors parties and performances. But that's not all. The PAcan be employed within a venue just as effectively. The sound system has been well accepted by fans and critics alike.

So to summarize the Tailgater PA's key features:
+ portable iPod dock that lasts for eight hours on the in-built battery
+ actually loud enough to be worthwhile to use outdoors
+ Eight hour battery life
+ good audio quality
+ includes with a microphone
+ works with iPhone 3G and a range of different instruments
- no bass control, need to use iPod EQ to clean up audio output if you want to
- claimed 12 hour full recharge time for the battery pack, just need to plan upfront for use
