Porch Canopies - Three Common Myths Exposed

The benefits of porch canopies and door porches are well known, including adding value to a property, convenience to a home and a welcome to all who visit. But although many people know that having porch canopies or door porches offers these benefits, many choose not to have them fitted or installed, and for several reasons which are based on either out of date information, or assumptions which simply are no longer true.

If you have considered having a porch canopy or door porch fitted to your home, or perhaps you already have an existing porch or canopy which is in need of repair or replacement, then it may well be that you have one or two doubts yourself. Perhaps that is why you're reading this page.

Through this article I intend to highlight some of the common concerns people have regarding door porches and canopies, and separate fact from fiction.

One of the first concerns people have is that having a porch or canopy fitted is a time consuming business, as with any extension or exterior building work. Visions of a team of builders drinking endless cups of tea for several days whilst the noise of drilling and hammering prevents you from relaxing until the work is done almost certainly come between you and actually having anything done.

These concerns would be entirely valid if they were true, but fortunately they are not. Although it is possible to have timber porch canopies or door porches fitted, these do tend to take much longer to have fitted, and will involve more work, more time and more disruption, But timber porches don't even necessarily provide the best fit or the most durable and long lasting porch solution.

A better alternative is to consider a porch or canopy made from a material known as Glass Reinforced Polyester, commonly referred to as GRP.

GRP door porches and canopies are extremely lightweight, and are manufactured off site, so that only a single contractor is needed to attach the porch canopy. The process is cold fitted, meaning that no naked flames are required, and the process takes very little time, and causes minimal disruption.

The second concern people have is with regard to expense. Certainly the past few months have not been kind, and it is natural to have concerns about the financial considerations. The two most significant expenses as far as door porches are concerned include the materials and the labour.

The materials vary, with timber based door porches and roof canopies involving felt roofing or lead roofing being quite expensive, especially at the moment.

However, GRP porch canopies cost very little, the material being one of the most inexpensive available. Because lead roofing, felt roofing and timber based canopies all take some time to construct the labour costs can be much higher.

Because GRP porch canopies can be fitted in a morning or an afternoon by a single contractor, labour costs are kept very low. If you have seen prices quoted for door porches it might surprise you to obtain a quotation for one constructed from Glass Reinforced Polyester instead, as it is likely to be considerably more affordable than you might guess.

The third concern often raised by people relates directly to GRP itself. The concern is that the appearance is too much like plastic, and that the visual appearance of lead roofing is far more appealing than a plain white plastic sheet.

This is entirely understandable, and entirely outdated. Many years ago when the GRP industry was in its infancy there was certainly a limited range. However, with developments in new manufacturing techniques, new materials and new processes it is possible to create GRP porch canopies and door porches in a wide range of styles, colours and appearances, many of which so closely mimic other materials such as wood or lead that without touching the material, people are almost always fooled.

Whether you're looking for a style or colour which blends in with your existing external decor, or a look which mimics the appearance of lead roofing, this is entirely possible. Offering the style, elegance and visual appeal of lead roofing without the weight, expense and disruption a real lead roof would involve, GRP porch canopies and door porches quite literally take the best aspects and advantages of manufacturing methods and combine them into a modern solution which is cost effective, highly durable and robust, and considerably more affordable than most people imagine.

Why not get a quotation today, and see for yourself how Glass Reinforced Polyester could change the way you think of roofing forever.
