There are many different designs of tent. They vary in terms of size, build quality and of intended use. The design which is best for you depends on the number of people who will be sleeping in the tent, and also on the type of place where you intend to camp, for example will you use a camp site, a festival field or will you be camping in the mountains. Some of the more popular designs of tent are:

Pop Up Tents
These are quite a new design of tent, and they are very fast to pitch and also very easy. You just need to remove the tent from its carry bag, and then simply let go. The tent will then spring open and expand to its full size. If it's a single-skin design, it's then just a matter of pegging the tent out and you're done. Double-skin pop up tents are a bit different, usually the inner part of the tent pops up, then you have to fix the outer over it before pegging out.

Dome Tents
Dome tents are a very popular design, and are possibly the most popular of all. They are often inexpensive to buy, do not weigh much for their size and internal space, and are also quite stable in winds. They are also quite fast to erect (pitch), however the smaller ones don't have enough room for a person to stand up and for this reason tend to suit shorter camping trips.

Frame Tents
These have a steel frame made from interconnecting poles and it is this frame which supports the outer tent. The inner tent is usually suspended from the frame and this forms the sleeping compartments. They are very strong and have a lot of headroom so that you can stand upright in them and plenty of living space, but they are quite heavy and can take quite a long time to pitch.

Tunnel Tents
This design is a tunnel shape because of the semi-circular hoops which give the tent its shape. They are available in anything from small sizes up to very big family sizes, sleeping ten or more people. They are quite good at staying up in windy conditions.

Lightweight Tents
This design is often used for backpacking, this is where the tent and all of the other camping equipment is carried in your rucksack. They usually only sleep one or two people, and they do not have a lot of headroom. More robust specialised versions are used for camping in the mountains where the weather conditions are more extreme.

There are many other designs of tent and some are actually a combination of more than one of these designs. Whichever design you decide to buy, you should ensure that it is large enough to fit the number of people who will be sleeping in it, and that it is not too heavy for you to transport. Large tents are usually best suited to sheltered camp sites where the wind will not be too much of a problem. In more mountainous or exposed places, smaller and stronger tents are the ones to choose.
