If your company is planning to turn to enterprise resource planning (ERP), it’s important to invest in the right ERP consultants for the job. However, if you’ve never had to choose ERP pros before, it may be a challenge to determine which are going to be the best for your organization.

To guide you through the process, we’ll look at six items you should consider of any potential ERP consultants:

1. Have the ERP Consultants Done Actual ERP Consulting and Implementation Before?

As surprising as it may sound, there are some ERP “consultants” that have no experience (or very little experience) in actual ERP planning and implementation. Though they may understand ERP, they are unlikely to provide you with the value you deserve for your investment. Instead, look for ERP consultants who understand the process comprehensively.

2. Have the ERP Consultants Worked with Big-Name ERP Product Organizations?

If your ERP consultant doesn’t work with some of the bigger names in ERP solutions and resources – Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, IBM, etc. – you should think twice before signing any contracts. Any ERP consulting firm worth your investment needs to have a thorough understanding of what products are on the market and how they can benefit you.

3. Do Your ERP Consultants Understand Your Industry?

It’s very important for your ERP consultants to take an interest in your industry. That’s where ERP customization comes into play. Though they needn’t be specialists in your field, they must be open to the fact that your ERP solutions will differ from those of another company.

4. Do Your ERP Consultants Offer You Flexibility?

Your business doesn’t have the same needs as the company down the street… and your ERP consultants have to be sensitive to this fact. For instance, you may require part-time ERP consulting; conversely, you may want a full-time, but temporary, ERP consultant to help you during a particular ERP implementation phase. Make certain your ERP consultants can and will give you this kind of flexibility.

5. Has the ERP Consultant Been in Business for Over Eight Years?

ERP models and solutions have changed during the past eight years; in fact, they are evolving every few months. If your ERP consultant hasn’t been in business for very long, it’s doubtful that you’ll be getting the benefit of a significant amount of knowledge.

6. Can Your ERP Consultant Provide You with Client Testimonials?

Choosing ERP for your company is an investment of time, dollars and manpower. Always ask any ERP consultants to provide you with testimonials and references from their clients. Then, follow up by contacting these references. That way, you can ensure that you’re getting exactly what you need.

Remember that it’s up to you to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your ERP consultants. Be choosy and do your homework – the success of your ERP system depends upon your diligence.
