When I decided that i needed to substitute my terribly away from date mobile telephone - an old Nextel i1000plus - my thoughts eventually wandered toward a pda telephone. For individuals that know me this probably seemed just like a no brainer. I have a lengthy history of pda dependence heading back again years to some Palm 3X. However, I currently had a pda that i was very happy with.
For the final year plus a half I had utilized my HP iPAQ 2215 for every thing from the PDA (Individual Digital Assistant), an e-book reader, an MP3 player, a photo wallet, an alarm clock, a mobile web browser(making use of a compact flash wifi card), between numerous other points. Attempting to cram a telephone in to all of this seemed overwhelming, but curiosity - and my require for a new gadget - got the much better of me. My lookup was twofold - appear for a new mobile telephone plus a new provider. With my current cell provider I didnt get any reception in my house so I needed to discover a carrier that did.
Through numerous unscientific signifies such as my personal opinion polls of friends and work associates in conjunction with some internet investigation I whittled my way down to possibly Cingular or Verizon. Each tended to obtain high marks from the customers I polled and the from internet investigation. With this particular part of the equation worked out I went on the internet to see what type of phones every had to provide. I was willing to go with a 2 year dedication within the hopes of getting a much better deal on telephone and plan pricing. In addition I desired to obtain a group plan wherever my wife and I could share minutes.
So, now Im looking on every companys respective websites for their state of the fine art Pocket PC phones. Im not talking concerning the Smart phones - these are the phones with Pocket PC software program jammed into a small small display that isnt even a touch display - that just wouldnt satisfy my needs. Im talking concerning the complete blown, "why have you been talking into your calculator?" Pocket PC phones - the uber-geek, pocket protector included type of micro pc powerhouse. Following all, Im married now and Im really not worried about public opinion or impressing anybody with my smooth, stylish, sexy new mobile telephone.
Im hoping to invest around $300.double zero. I figure I can market my iPAQ 2215 on eBAY for $200.double zero and $100.double zero for a new telephone appears just like a pretty good deal.
So, what I discover is one heck of a cost tag. Verizon has the much talked about Treo 700. This is the first Treo with the Pocket PC operating system - Windows Mobile 5.0. This comes in at $500.double zero. Way as well pricey for me also it doesnt even have Wifi.
Cingulars best cost on a PocketPC telephone wasnt much much better. I could get an HP iPAQ hw6510 for $400.double zero. Once again, no wifi. This is a real sticking stage for me. I dont see any cause why a system created for communication would leave out this major specification. Being capable to connect to an 802.11b/g wireless network when it's available is a necessity.
Okay, back again to the drawing board, perhaps I can test this from the different angle - Ebay.
Looking up "Pocket PC phone" on Ebay gets you very a great deal of hits with a good assortment of newer and older Pocket PC phones. At this stage Im thinking that i could get some thing perhaps slightly utilized that would fulfill all of my needs. This would also give me a good cross section of exactly what's out there and what functions are available in this kind of gadget.
Following heading via very a great deal of auction descriptions and cross referencing producer web websites I had set my websites on a particular telephone, the Siemens SX66. This particular phone/pda combo had been provided by Cingular until recently also it no longer showed on their web site. It seemed to suit my desire list: a fast 400mhz xscale processor, wifi, Bluetooth, SDIO slot also it had a slide out keyboard for text input. So, I watched a few auctions and kept an eye about the prices.
But, sometimes you just have to get off of the internet and strike the brick and mortar. I went to my local Verizon and Cingular stores and talked to the sales reps about what plans I was looking for. I wasnt amazed with my lengthy wait in the Verizon Wireless shop or even the pushy salesman that i got. He seemed to think he knew just what I needed and kept showing me phones and plans that i just wasnt enthusiastic about.
I had a different experience in the Cingular shop. The sales rep showed me a map of the mobile coverage around my house, he talked to me concerning the plans that i had observed about the web site and when I mentioned to him that i had been looking at a Siemens SX66 Pocket PC telephone on Ebay he went into the back again of the shop and came out with the final SX66 which they had. I signed on to some 2 year deal with Cingular that night with a heck of a good deal on a Pocket PC telephone that had all the specifications that i had been looking for.
And also you know what? I can even speak on my Siemens SX66 sitting in my residing room.
