Ponder an existence limited by fear and anxiety, in which every act is analyzed and even the most inconsequential decision is agonized over. Extensive time is spent considering daily tasks or conditions that many people deal with easily. According to the National Institute of Health, better than 40 million people in the United States who endure anxiety disorders are inflicted with this type of life.

Concordantly, about 18 percent of those living in the United States are diagnosed with some form of a panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, general anxiety disorder or phobias, such as a social phobia, agoraphobia, or a specific phobia, which embody common fears of articles such as germs, heights or elevators.

Are you among them? A lot of people do not know how to distinguish if their inherent concerns have evolved into a phobia. A phobia is categorized as an unreasonable dread or fear. When someone comes upon a phobia trigger, that person may grow panicked with increased heart palpitation and respiration. Frequently, that person may begin experiencing a choking sensation or their hands turn sweaty. They may also have ringing in their ears and recognize they are unable to concentrate on their surroundings.

As with any unpleasant feeling, people may go to great lengths to sidestep the incident, settings and items that produce them. If a person has a social phobia, that person will elude people, or if it is a common phobia, including spiders or coffins, those who have a phobia will seek to evade those triggers.

The anxiety disorder phobia can be one of the most convoluted to solve because related coping concerns often result from the phobia / anxiety relationship, such as melancholy or drug addiction. In fact, most people who suffer from one anxiety disorder regularly cultivate additional anxiety disorders.

Though it can be helpful to meet with a mental health professional to identify your phobia and inspect the origin of it, the vital step is initiating treatment for the phobia and anxiety. There are several therapies for effectively treating a phobia, including drugs, talk therapy, systematic desensitization, hypnotherapy, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Usually, medication for phobia and anxiety treatment include sedatives, which actually exacerbate the trouble because the medications don't help the fundamental reason for the phobia. Other mental health professionals prefer to use talk therapy; however, conversing about or even thinking about the condition or environment of the fundamental anxiety phobia can cause a panic attack.

Traditional hypnosis - which merely assists the client to accomplish a relaxed hypnotic state and then giving post-hypnotic suggestions or commands can be very effective if the he or she is receptive to it. That said, many people with phobias snub the notion that they will be more comfortable and at ease when they are challenged with the situation or environment that activates anxiety from the correlating phobia.

Knowing the challenges and even hindrances of other forms of phobia treatments, systematic desensitization can be a helpful treatment. It is the course of slowly desensitizing a client to the trigger that produces the anxiety disorder phobia and resulting panic attacks.

For example, if a client aims to rise above a phobia of dogs, she is asked to first sit down and visualize a dog until she is secure with the picture. Then, she is given a photograph of a dog to view. Perhaps she progresses to holding a toy dog and so on until she is able to stay in the presence of a dog without the panic symptoms - possibly even pet it.

The essential point is that, after each movement, she acknowledges that nothing terrible happened and that she is protected. If at any time she feels panic or fear, the therapist asks the client to revert to the previous step until she has recovered a feeling of ease.

Fortunately, there is a tactic to make this process less painful and frightening: Systematic desensitization can be carried out as the subject is in a relaxed state of hypnosis. While in a relaxed hypnotic trance, the subject would be asked to perform the same actions, however she would actually feel very peaceful as she imagined herself feeling comfortable and relaxed in the anxiety-provoking situation.

Just like live systematic desensitization that happens without the assistance of hypnosis, if she feels any anxiety regarding her phobia, she is coached to go back to the previous step. The only downside is that this process may require a fair amount of time to bring liberation from a phobia.

The quickest and most effective technique to get rid of a phobia is a Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique called a Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation. It often cures the subject of a long-term phobia in just one session. The technique actually programs clients to disassociate, or mentally step outside of themselves at the point that they would normally undergo their anxiety attack. The process literally splits the subjective feelings from the mental images that create the panic attack in the first place.

CONCLUSION: While any phobia treatment that someone takes on will entail work and commitment, systematic desensitization coupled with hypnosis can offer an effective cure. But the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation can offer a solution that almost seems magical by allowing the subject to triumph over the phobia quickly with significantly less - perhaps even no discomfort or panic.
