A place of myth and legend since Neolithic times, the story of Paphos takes shape when it developed as a centre of worship for Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love and fertility. Aphrodite was born from the foam of the sea by the Petra Tou Romiou, meaning 'rock of the Greek.' This is an ancient and beautiful site and well worth a visit. The Romans founded the origins of the Paphos we see today by 1400BC and made it the capital of Cyprus. Lots of other invaders and settler have ruled in the city and left their mark on Paphos. But a gradual loss of influence on the rest of Cyprus saw Paphos become less prominent locally and it ceased to be the island's centre of government.

A re-emerging and more modern Paphos as a stylish and quality resort in the 1970s tourism boom led to visitors now discovering the vast variety of ancient architecture, sites of historical interest and outstanding and well preserved ruins of the city's ancient past - and the weather's pretty good as well! A vibrant open-air museum is one way of explaining the uniqueness of Paphos. The cultural and spiritual relics of Paphos' colourful history are not merely restricted to a few dusty museums and poorly attended guided tours. Rather, the entire city of Paphos and its environs are like a vast outdoor mythical experience. So much so that UNESCO has decided to make the whole of Paphos a World Heritage Site. Every mile is punctuated with castles, columns, temples and sculptures. Art too is in abundance. From the remarkable Byzantine frescoes of the Ayios Neophytos Monastery to Emba's painted church, the quality and significance of these examples is the reason why holidays in Paphos have become hugely popular for the tourist that wants to engage with history and culture as well as being able to relax in style in 5 star accommodation.

Anyone with an appreciation of ancient art show make time for a visit to the Roman Mosaics near the pretty harbour of Kato Paphos. Unearthed almost by accident by a local farmer around 40 years ago, the mosaics are incredibly detailed and almost perfectly preserved. Various scenes are depicted, including a range of Roman Gods and early Roman activity. Other sites of interest include the Tomb of the Kings, with magnificent pillars; these subterranean chambers have been hewn from solid rock. Outdoor leisure activities are also a highlight ot the outdoor lifestyle offered in this part of Cyprus. The typical Mediterranean climate of Paphos and its warm seas make it an ideal destination for visitors to enjoy scuba diving, sailing and paragliding. The main tourist beaches around Paphos can become packed during the peak months of the summer but there are plenty of secluded places to discover for those searching for a more tranquil and peaceful Paphos holiday. With golf courses, horse and pony trekking nearby, taking a break in villas in Paphos is also an ideal way to explore the surrounding Cyprus countryside. A boat trip from the city is an excellent way to explore the coast, while further afield the Troodos Mountains offer the chance to explore offroad by bike, and if the weather plays ball there can be skiing and snowboarding in the winter months. All these choices mean you can get more from your holiday in Paphos.

Everyone hopes their holiday will deliver in terms of luxury, style and quality. The Paphos experience is made all the more rich and meaningful when combined with luxurious accommodation and virtually continuous good weather, at any time of the year.
