Considering the recent events taking place in our small society, it is difficult to say any place is safe to be, whether it is at work, on the street or even at home. It is a critical matter to learn about our surroundings and take precautions to be safe and prepared at all times from any kind of danger and violence.

Work place safety has become extremely important for us today. Those who work in the field areas and public relations, handle patients or inmates, travel to homes in the community as part of the work, or have the authority to enforce rules on the public, are at a greater risk for workplace violence.

It is always advisable and wise to spend less time alone as much as possible. Keeping a trusted person with whom you communicate regularly is important. Also make sure that a member of your family, spouse or children know your whereabouts and work plans so that they can keep track of your location throughout the day. Keep your phone on, with battery fully charged all the time, for immediate contact at any time.

Sexual harassment has been a common problem in all fields of work in all societies. It is regarded as any unwelcome sexual conduct in order to get or keep a job, to achieve something, get on the good side of superiors and avoid negative consequences, get ahead in jobs such as obtaining awards, promotions, special privileges and other such incidents. Sexual harassment is a very serious and complex issue. It should never be ignored as it will only get worse if it is taken lightly and kept unattended. While at workplace or anywhere in public it is always important to take control of your own self. Simple and direct verbal warnings that you are not interested, to stay away from you and not to repeat similar acts should be firmly used in any likely harassments. Keep record of events and witnesses in case of any similar happenings. In case it is repeated inform the harasser through emails or similar methods where there is documented proof of your request to stop such behavior. Always trust your intuition! Continued harassment should be informed to superiors and if ever you fear of safety never hesitate to leave the scene and go to friends, co workers, yell for help or even call the police.

Danger spots at workplace such as elevators, staircases, and restrooms must be avoided completely during after hours or before hours of work, especially when alone. In case you need to work late night or after hours when the whole office building is almost isolated, it is wise to keep a trusted companion. Otherwise keep regular contact or let your whereabouts be known to a trusted person. Get to know who the security guards, contractors or other hired help are, for your own safety.

Avoid keeping personal items specially documents and id’s which contain your personal information on the work desk for people to see. Make sure that you are not predictable to others when it comes to cash deposits and other cash handlings. Also be on the lookout for suspicious people and stalkers and take necessary actions. Avoid creating unnecessary conflicts with co workers and customers. Always be kind and considerate with co workers and others and create healthy and safe work relationships with them.

Though unhappy employees are likely to commit workplace violence, often it is customers and strangers that create such instances. So those who deal directly with the public should take extra precautions as they are at greater risk for work related violence.

Whether it is at workplace or anywhere it is always wise to be prepared. Training in self defense and to be prepared for hostile conflicts is very important. Therefore employers should also take measures to train the employees of all fields in recognizing warning signs and responding to workplace violence. Policies and actions in response to threats, harassment and other work related violence should be established by the employer and clearly informed to all employees. Weaknesses in security, hostility between departments and changes in employee’s behavior (such as numerous absences, irregular schedules, phone calls that leave the employee distressed, and physical brushings or similar signs) should be observed carefully. Although the employer must not take an obligation to protect the employee, necessary safety precautions and assistance should be made available to the employees.

Learning and knowing about the employer is really crucial for any employee in order to work in a safe environment. Workplace safety includes a lot of responsibilities on the part of employers. They must make sure that the facilities are well lit and well guarded, employee’s restrooms are not available to public, threats and harassments are taken seriously, check the background and drug dealings of candidates before hiring and also take preventive measures against workplace violence such as training and awareness programs for the employees. Then only the employers can gain the trust of the employees regarding a safe work environment.
