The Ion Tailgater PA is a pro quality amplifier system and can be used with a range of inputs. Although intended primarily for the iPhone and the iPod, the speaker can be employed just as effectively with musical instruments as well as mp3 players. Designed to seem like a classic guitar amplifier, the Tailgater portable is highly transportable and can be used in the open or at a site just as easily due to it's self contained battery pack. It has a heavy duty and rugged but portable construction complete with a carry handle. It is only a single speaker, but most portable system are too little to truly get stereo effects anyway. It has a two way speaker design, with a 6" woofer and 1.5 inch 1.5" dome tweeter. The sole real drawback is that it doesn't have any treble adjustment and the normal sound is a bit muddy, but this is altered using the iPods EQ. As for sound volume, it can get loud. Even out of doors I rarely go past third of max volume.

The Tailgater is well-matched with a wide range of musical instruments and mp3 players. Additionally it is also compatible with CD and DVD players. The amplifier is designed with several inputs for the microphone and other devices and a high quality microphone with XLR connection is included with the package.

A further great characteristic is that it operates on both mains power and the built in chargeable battery pack. Battery life is stated as being eight hrs at two thirds volume according to the manual . We have not been able to totally test it yet, but at two thirds volume it ran for 3+ hours and the meter still showed 3 out of four lights! Therefore there is no real doubt that the 8 hour claim is feasible which is amazing. Recharging takes about 4 hours and there is a useful battery level indicator to show the level of the current battery charge.

This glorious piece of hardware is an audio lover's fantasy. The heavy duty output and the lightweight but craggy construction make it the ultimate amplifier for outside parties and performances. However that is not all. The sound system may be employed in a venue just as well. The sound system has been well accepted by fans and critics alike.

So to sum up the Tailgater PA's main features:
+ portable iPod docking station that lasts for eight hrs on the built-in battery
+ actually loud enough to be worthwhile to use outside
+ Eight hour battery life
+ good audio quality
+ comes with a mic
+ works with iPhone 3G and an array of other kit
- no bass adjustment, need to use iPod EQ to clean up audio output if you want to
- claimed 12 hour full recharge timefor the battery, so you need to plan in advance for usage
