Impotence is the health disorder that most men fear. This is due to the fact that most men attach more importance to sexual relationship than women and almost no guy can imagine a long-lasting and healthy relationship without excellent sex. And even though the common opinion is that erectile dysfunction affects only older males, this is not always the case; even males younger than thirty, who lead absolutely fulfilling, healthy and normal lives, can get affected as well. The causes of erectile dysfunction are different, but are usually divided into physical or psychological (emotional); while the former have to be looked into by a medical professional, the latter can lead to temporary impotence, which can go away on its own.

If you are affected by erectile problems, do not assume right away that this is impotence; the temporary inability to attain an erection can be caused by the lack of experience, stress, previous negative experiences, depression, but if the problems persist for a few months, then it is better to seek professional medical advice. If you have been diagnosed with eretile dysfunction, you have a few treatment options to choose from. These treatments can be therapy, surgery, penile injections or medication. Some of these options are outdated, while others are still used today and very effective; and although each treatment has certain pros and cons, the synthetic drugs are the preferred choice by most doctors and patients.

The first oral anti-impotence drug ever approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in the United States was sildenafil citrate, which was launched and sold under the trade name Viagra by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Nowadays close to 320 million pills are sold each year; the enormous success of the medicine came after millions of dollars spent on marketing and many years of research, and the sales numbers motivated other pharmaceutical companies to develop similar synthetic products too.

Although nowadays there are at least two more ED synthetic pills available (Levitra and Cialis), Viagra still holds 50% of the market.

The sildenafil citrate 100mg tablets are the largest dosage, but smaller tablets of 25mg and 50mg are also available. Viagra is an oral medication, it is taken with a glass of water and no more than one pill should be taken per 24 hours.

How safe is it?

Sildenafil citrate is sold either as Viagra, or as generic Viagra – the generic pills have the same active components as the trade name pill, but are manufactured by companies different than Phizer. As long as the pill has the same active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, it will be equally effective and work just as well as the brand-name drug. The only difference is that due to the fewer initial expenses and low cost of labor, the generic pills are cheaper. Clinical researches have proven that sildenafil citrate is very safe – actually the patients that were taking placebo had just as many complaints as the patients taking real sildenafil; although these results were quite promising, the possible side effects shouldn't be ignored – in some cases they can be serious, thus if any discomfort has been felt while taking the pills, visit to the doctor is required.
