Online Games-Pastime or Problem?

Read More About Games

Most of us find something to do on our computers every day. For many, that something is online games. You can play alone against a software program or even with other online users live. You can rack up points, rewards, and tokens and for the adult (gambling) variety, even cash payouts!
When online game players spend increasing amounts of time playing, it may be a reason for worry among their friends and family, especially for parents of younger players. However, some child behavioral experts have suggested quite the opposite, saying online games are useful tools for development in kids.
Online games come in all varieties for kids and adults. Many sites that offer online games also offer a free trial membership to start so that you can try out a few games and see if you like what the site has to offer. This is followed by a request that you become a paid subscriber. Now for some, that may seem like a lure especially for younger users. Actually when you think about it, compared to the price spent at an arcade pumping quarters into the game machines,or the cost of an expensive home gaming system plus an ongoing supply of new games to playa monthly membership wins hands down! Plus there is the variety factor. You can try a multitude of games at most online gaming sites to see which ones you like.
Some gaming sites are home for a single game. These are usually high traffic, multi-player online games with role playing and multiple levels. The players of these games can be very serious about their gaming. They often unite into groups and even make up their own story lines. Some of these types of popular cult games have been made into hit movies Yes, the fan base for these games was large enough to justify spending a hundred million to turn it into a Hollywood epic! The dedicated one-game sites are live multi-player arenas where the combatants are communicating in real time over the internet as they play, using text messages or even headsets with live internet enabled audio communication. There can also be multiple websites that support these high action group games, functioning only as information and networking sites. These support sites have tips on playing the games, forums, networking and more, all in relation to the main game site. This type of online gaming is probably not the best choice for younger minds.
Of course parents with younger children should make sure they know what their children are playing online. There are many games that are really too dark or violent for younger kids but there are ample amounts of happy, safe, fun "kid friendly" games on most gaming sites. Keep in mind that some games do enable live chat or even audio during the game between users. That can be a big no-no for most parents of younger kids and for valid reasons.
All in all, online game sites are not a bad activity for the mind, young or old. They inspire thinking, planning, achieving goals, social activity and striving for improvement...not to mention the 'ol hand-eye co-ordination! Have fun!
