Old time radio (OTR) is not dead. In fact, it's alive and well on the Internet. The Internet has been a big help in revitalizing old time radio (OTR). After the days of old time radio were over, the only way to dig up any of these shows was to locate them on old reel to reel tape and listen to them in this format. Some kind folks converted these shows to phonograph records and afterward to cassette tapes.

There was a very little group of old radio fans that used to convert the shows and trade them with each other.. Hardley anyone knew about these clubs and consequently weren't able to get the shows.

When more and more people started to get computers, several of the more tallented users were able to convert the shows to a digital format.. They could then be put on audio CD. The CD could only hold seventy minutes of shows, which wasn't much. With the development of the mp3 compressed audio format, distribution was now possible via the Internet. It's now possible for all to enjoy the fun of old time radio because of all who converts these shows and puts them on the net. With the high speed Internet connections we benefit from today, we can download as many shows as we want in a very brief amount of time.

OK, so now that we know that these great old radio shows are available to us agian, how do we go about finding them? There are a few ways that we can do this.

The most expensive way is to buy the shows at a book store in audio format. Sure, these audio CD's will play in any CD player, including the one in your car, but you can only fit 70 minutes of shows on each CD. Plus, these are rather high-priced.

You can search the Internet and purchase old time radio disk sets in mp3 format. The mp3 format is compressed. Many shows can be put on each disk. These CD or DVD disks won't play on a standard player, but you can listen to them on your computer or mp3 player.

Another way to get the shows would be to join an Internet download site. You'll pay a monthly fee for access to the shows that are on the website. This is much cheaper and a good option for those with a home computer.

The best way to get the shows is for free. There are several sites on the Internet that offer free shows. There aren't too many of these sites, as there is quite a bit of cost involved to start and maintain an Internet website. There is the cost of registering the domain name, paying a monthly fee for web hosting and paying for the old time radio disk sets. Because of this, many of these sites can only offer a few hundred shows in limited genres.

The top old time radio websites are those that are run as a hobby club. This is where the visitors donate ten or twenty dollars one time, to help pay for the website and to buy more shows.

From then on, each person who made a donation gets full access to all the old radio shows on the website, plus all the additional shows as they are added. The best clubs will also offer a discussion forum so the members can talk to the webmaster and other members. Here, they can speak about old time radio and share information and shows with each other. A good news blog can be helpful too. This allows the site's webmaster to let the members know when new shows have been added to the club's website.

Why is a hobby club way better than a download site? Not all, but several of these download sites are just a business and are not necessarily run by people who are involved in old time radio. The majority of the time, a OTR hobby club is owned and maintained by a person who's only hobby is old time radio. They are more interested in sharing shows than making a profit. That's why only a small donation is asked for instead of an high-priced monthly fee. By combining club member donations, each person can have access to more shows than they could on their own.Joining an old time radio club can be a lot of fun. What a wonderful way to share this pleasurable hobby with others and keep it going for future fans to enjoy.
