It would be hard for the Edmonton Oilers to be worse against the NHL probabilities at the sportsbook than they were last year.

With Pat Quinn as head coach, Edmonton was 27-48-8 last season. It appears the Oilers will be improved against the probabilities at the offshore sportsbook with the new coach, since this season they will now be coached by Tom Renney.

General manager Steve Tambellini made the statement on Tuesday. He said that his objective had always been for Pat Quinn to take a senior advisory role, while Tom Renney was to be the coach. Tambellini appears to feel that Renney is a demonstrated coach in terms of development and structure, and would also be best going forward with a young group.

Quinn was in charge for 1,400 games and picked up 684 wins. Only 3 other NHL teams have won more games. He will still be going to training camp, traveling to Oklahoma City to see the team's American Hockey League affiliate play, and he'll go on some of the Oilers' road trips. Quinn could have coached until he was 90 if he'd been allowed, according to Tambellini. He basically loves the sport.

Sportsbook probabilities still won't prefer Edmonton very often in 2010-2011 but the team may be improved. Taking Quinn off the bench is a move in the proper direction. He's basically not a good head coach now, though he was a good head coach a decade ago. Quinn will stay with the team as a senior advisor. Renney will take control as head coach and it'll be his third shot as an NHL head coach. He coached the New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks. He will now be anticipated to enhance an Edmonton team that won only 18 games at home and only 9 on the road last season. The team hasn't made the playoffs since 2006.

The Oilers hired Quinn in May of 2009 but it was clear that he was not the right man for the job. Quinn was really not ready for the young players that Edmonton has, given that he had not coached in the league since 2006. Injuries also didn't help Quinn's cause last year. The Oilers lost Nikolai Khabibulin, Alex Hemsky, Sheldon Souray and Ladislav Smid to injuries and they didn't have much depth to cover for it.

Dustin Penner headed the Oilers a year ago but he had just 63 points. The Oilers averaged just 2.5 goals per game, making them very poor on offense. They also didn't stay out of the penalty box and that hurt them. The defense was even worse as they allowed 3.4 goals per game which was the lowest in the league. Their penalty killing was poor as they were 26th in the league.

Despite the poor numbers from last season, the Oilers may be improved next season against the probabilities at the offshore sportsbook. Edmonton will get numerous players back from injury and they ought to be motivated to play well under their new head coach.
