The general consensus is the some people are creative and some are not. Creativity is something you're born with. You either have it or you don't. That is not true at all. In fact, creativity is like a muscle that requires exercise in order to grow and perform properly. If you don't practice creative thinking then the skill will not develop and, worse, fade away. Keep pushing your creative limits and you'll become more creative then you ever thought you could be.

So how do you engage you're creative thinking? Well, first you should increase your awareness of your surroundings and the things you hear, see and read. Learn as much as you can about anything you can. New ideas and new knowledge help stimulate creative thought in your mind. Read fiction books, especially science fiction, as this type of literature can expand the limits of your thinking.

You also need to focus on using your creative mind every day. It may seem like a lot of work but it's something that must be done if you wish to become more creative. There are many different ways to exercise creativity. Get your digital camera and try to take creative photos, try drawing something creative each day, write some song lyrics or a short story, think about improving a product that you use. Do this each day and after a while it will become second nature. You will start looking at everything from a more creative perspective. Sure, in the beginning the things you create may not seem very creative but over time you will improve and your concepts and ideas will become more and more original and creative.

You probably hear the phrase think outside the box quite often. And, yes, thinking outside the box is a good way to be creative. However, you may want to try thinking inside a small box as well. Find a problem that needs to be solved and try to solve it given a lot of constraints. You'll find that the more constraints you have the more creative you'll have to become to solve the problem. Product creation works in this way also. Sure, anybody can come up with a creative product. But, can that product actually be produced on a mass scale at a price that will be marketable? Can it be shipped? These are constraints that make product creation more difficult.

Exploring new environments will help nurture your creativity as well. Try driving a different way to work or school. Ride your bike around your neighborhood. Take a trip down to the museum. Watch an activity that haven't seen before such as skateboarders or surfers. The more variety you inject into your experience the more your mind will expand and become more creative. You can even engage in new activities such as hiking, snowboarding, surfing, etc. Listen to a different genre of music.

You've got to break out of your routine, both physical and mental, to become more creative. If you think like everyone else then you'll create like everyone else. Break from the herd and you're more likely to see things from a different perspective.
Once you've successfully done that then you will be far better able to think and produce in a more creative way.
