Sick of going to the same restaurants and eating the same food, where there is no variety or diversity in the menu. Due to my career and busy schedule, one of the advantages of my lifestyle is that I eat most meals out at restaurants around the various towns that I frequently visit. One city that I love returning to is Newcastle which is around 2 hours from Sydney Australia and there are many restaurants in Newcastle that I have eaten at that are worth writing about, one in particular. There are two popular cafe strips that I visit whilst staying in Newcastle and that is Darby Street and Beaumont Street. I went to a new restaurant a couple of weeks ago in Darby Street and was completely amazed by the diverse menu and excellent service from the waitress that served me.

The Depot on Darby is a stylish Newcastle restaurant that firstly draws you in with it's open plan dining, modern layout, rustic artworks and unique container bar found at the back of the restaurant. Darby Street is a popular spot for socialising and eating, full of small cafes and restaurants that sometimes can be hard to find a seat due to over booking etc. The Depot is fortunately one of the larger restaurants on Darby Street that believes in a no booking policy so you can just walk in and take a seat with no pesky 'reserved' markers on there tables. Almost instantly one of there friendly staff pops out of nowhere with a carafe of water and a welcoming smile. She tells me of there specials of the day, which all sound terrific, then hands me a menu to consider my meal. Take your time, I'll pop back in a couple of minutes to see if you're ready to order' she says happily then shoots off to services another table that had just been filled.

I was bedazzled with the range of sophisticated meals on the menu, and the price was more then fair. Once I decided on what I wanted I closed the menu and looked up and there was my pretty waitress there to take my order as promised. What makes a good waitress isn't just the prompt service and knowledge of the menu, but it's also the way that they make you feel welcome by asking how you are and where you are from - just general interest that makes them seem more real and not a robot processing your order.

As I sat and sipped my coffee waiting for my meal, I looked out from the open restaurant to view the lively street where happy customers entered and left the restaurant content with there experience. When the food arrived a sensational waft of flavours exploded in my face that got me salivating like a hungry dog, I had to restrain myself until the waitress had left after asking wether I would like some cracked pepper with my meal. The dish was to die for as it was cooked perfectly with fresh local produce and an abundance of passion prepared by some of the best chefs in Newcastle. Once I had finished, my waitress delivered the desert menu and asked if everything was to my liking. I didn't order any desert, as I'm not a real sweets fan, though the 'trio of deserts' that was placed on the couple table near me looked beautifully presented, and by the look of the young lovers faces when the dove into the deserts they certainly enjoyed it.

I've been back 3 or 4 times in the last couple of weeks since my first visit to try other dishes that looked appealing, and I can say it is definitely one of my favours restaurants in Newcastle, maybe even my favourite restaurant of all time. There specials are always changing which is delightful, as I know I will go through everything on the menu but there will always be an option to try something new. I would definitely recommend going to this Newcastle restaurant as I feel that it has something for everyone. It has excellent service, great food, good atmosphere and is well priced - what more do you want!
