If you've ever had a yearly performance review for your job, you'll understand the how they can be helpful in providing that bigger picture view than you ordinarily have in your day to day life. You might become aware of activities that are unproductive, limiting, or even detrimental to your professional advancement.

Your goals can also benefit from this process. By creating an annual New Year review for your life, it can help you assess progress in all areas of your life, address challenges, and come up with some exciting new goals and plans for the New Year.

The best time to do a review of your goals is during the last few weeks of the year, but it can be done any time you want a fresh start.

Here are some tips on how to review your goals from 2009.

Set the Mood - When you are ready to begin your review, create a calm and quiet mood. Put on comfortable clothes and choose a private area where you won't be disturbed for about an hour, and have a pen and notebook nearby. You can also light some scented candles or incense, and play some soft music if it helps you relax and get in the right frame of mind. Before you start, take a few minutes to sit quietly and take some slow, deep breaths. This will help you release stress and focus your thoughts.

Review - Now you are ready to begin reviewing your life over the past year. Did you accomplish everything you wanted to? Are there areas for improvement? Give some thought to these categories:

1. Physical health and fitness – what is your overall health and any ailments you may have, your diet and level of fitness?
2. Mental health – how was your attitude throughout the year? Were you governed by positive or negative thoughts and emotions?
3. Financial health – what is your level of debt and savings, your income versus your lifestyle, your net assets, level of investments?
4. Career – dream job or job that pays the bills?
5. Spiritual growth - inner peace, meditation and religion?
6. Self- Development – new skills, and experiences?
7. Relationships - with your partner, children, friends and family.
8. Recreation and Social needs

For each of the above categories, ask yourself the following questions and write your answers in the notebook.

1. Which of my positive actions contributed to growth and progress?
2. Which of my negative actions caused stagnation and lack of progress?
3. What could I do better to improve my progress in the coming year?

It is very important not to judge yourself too hard during this review. The review is an unemotional, objective view of your life goals and progress. By becoming aware of the areas where you can take more control over your life, you can create more success and abundance.

Once you've reviewed your life of the last 12 months, you can now sit down and truly set goals for the new year that are based on your progress and not just whims of New Year's day.
