What is it with women and their shoes? We go a little doolally for them. High ones, flat ones, booted, sandals; you name it, we want it.

Our love affair with shoes is nothing new. In France during the Renaissance, shoes were as fashionable as the outfits the courtiers wore, and were changed as often as the outer garments. Ever since we have been slightly obsessed.

It''s no wonder why really. Shoes with heels can elongate the leg. Strappy sandals can make the ankles appear smaller and more streamlined. Flats are comfy and practical but also girly and fun. Colours and styles can be frivolous or understated and it seems we can''t resist bows, peep toes, ribbons and buckles.

Shoe styles have changed considerably over the years. Back in the Renaissance everyone, men and women, wore court shoes because they were members of the royal court. Some had laces others had buckles. Later we moved on to flat shoes for men and stilettos for women. Then in the 20th century we wore trainers for the first time.

The world of trainers has enjoyed a major revolution. Women wear them as well as men and can still manage to look feminine and they feet scream a million thank yous after decades of stiletto wearing.

Now, shoes are available in almost any style imaginable. Shoe designers have taken influence from the past, and blended it with modern, futuristic styles. Materials now are prettier but more hardwearing and long lasting. Variety on offer in any high-street shop these days is seemingly endless.

So what are the key looks for summer 2010? Gladiator sandals are back but this time they have even more buckles and straps. You can get away with the brown and black styles of 2009, but to be particularly on trend this year, go for nude hues.

This year''s must have is the platformed stiletto. They add instant height and sex appeal. You will score big fashion points by pursuing nude styles, particularly mauve and beige and combine this with bows and peep toes for the most up to date style.

When it comes to materials, boring old leather is out. Instead, look for satin, patent, and suede. As a rule of thumb this season, if it feels good, it will look good. Remember to add even more details with bows and studs, flowers and ruffles and for some added oomph, peep toes are the ultimate in sex kitten feet. And don''t forget that pedicure.
