The Answer to a Brighter Smile Could Be Whitening Your Teeth.

We all hope for a gorgeous smile and many of us feel like our teeth are not as bright as we would like. Some people just don't inherit shiny, white teeth, and others can darken their teeth with red wine, coffee and tea.

Should you have discolored teeth or if they are are simply not as white as you would like, you probably have been thinking about whitening as an answer to your situation. The aging process can also contribute to the discoloration of the teeth. You can look years younger by simply whitening your teeth.

Those people who determine that they need to whiten their teeth will schedule an appointment with their dentist. The dentist will create an impression of both your upper and lower teeth. Your dentist will send this off to a lab.

A cast representing your teeth will be constructed from the models while they are at the dental laboratory. A plastic substance is employed to create trays from this. These trays next go back to your dental office.

The dentist will demonstrate the proper method of putting the trays in your mouth and offer suggestions on the manner of using the kit. Using syringes, you'll put whitening gel in the parts of the trays that correspond to the teeth you need to whiten. You insert the trays into your mouth at bedtime and sleep all night with them in place.

The procedure is repeated from night to night until the desired shade of white is achieved. In most cases people get instant results, and the entire process only takes about 2 to 3 weeks to reach your goal. If a patient suffers from tetracycline discoloration or fleurosis, the treatment will become long term and it may take up to six months until the goal is reached.

If there is any dental work that needs to be taken care of, you should wait at least 2 weeks after your last whitening to stabilize your color. Normally, the process does not have to be repeated. A lot of research went into the longevity of whitening, and people are very happy their teeth remain white for year after year.

There is a possibility you could experience some sensitivity at the beginning or during the treatment. But this is typically bearable and will correct itself when the treatment is completed. However, if the sensitivity is unbearable, sensodyne toothpaste can be used to ease the sensitivity.

On top of visiting your dentist, there are other, over the counter treatments, you can purchase that are known to be safe. You will probably not receive as desirable a result. Most of these products can get you a slight whitening effect and reduce some stains, however they generally won't give you that lift in shade you're looking for.

The more successful options available over-the-counter include plastic strips or a customizable mouth tray, similar to the ones from the dentist. You can get a the desired custom fit with these, but they can be expensive.

Patients should steer away from any staining substances for the next two weeks after having their teeth treated. Cigarettes, coffee, tea, and red wine are known to stain teeth. Always speak to your dentist if you suffer any pain, an extreme degree of sensitivity or abnormal gum irritation.
