Migraineurs find solace in a dark quiet room to appease their throbbing headaches. Migraineurs, though, are five times more expected to develop clinical sadness than people who do not have these weakening headaches. Equally, people who are depressed are three times likelier than jovial people to become migraineurs.

Lots of scientists deem the intertwining of migraine and depression as a chicken or egg situation. They are clearly comorbid, but does one produce the other? If so, which one starts off the process, the migraine or the melancholy? The reply is not that straightforward. Migraines, melancholy, and, unsurprisingly, wakefulness, a situation related with both conditions have something in common. All three are associated with neurotransmitter faults in the brain.

Specialists think that while they are interrelated, sadness and migraine headaches have individual reasons with an analogous neurobiology. For years, doctors charged sadness in migraineurs on their consequential loss of quality of life due to headaches. Now it looks as though the connection is a biologic shared mechanism rather than psychology.

One risk for clinically depressed migraineurs is an impending drug interaction between their sadness prescription and their migraine drugs. In July 2006, the FDA knew one such menace, that of adding triptans for migraines with SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) or SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), used to remedy hopelessness and mood ailments. Adding the medications can lead to a situation called serotonin syndrome.

Serotonin syndrome manifests when there is unwarranted serotonin in the body. Signs include hallucinations, increased heart rate and body temperature, swift changes in blood pressure, and gastrointestinal upset. Every so often, a patient has no alternative but to take these medications all together, but they have to contemplate their alternatives with their doctor and be observed closely for serotonin syndrome.
