The Washington Nationals already seem like a club which will improve against the MLB odds.

Now that they have number one draft pick Bryce Harper, they look better still now. He is almost as hyped as Stephen Strasburg and might be impacting MLB lines within a couple of years.

MLB odds still do not like the Washington Nationals very much but that is starting to shift. Strasburg was the number 1 pick last year, and he is a huge piece of the Washington Nationals future against the MLB odds. Now the Washington Nationals have included Harper to the mix. He's considered one of the better players to arrive from high school in a long time. He is only 17 years old but almost everybody is forecasting big things for the Washington Nationals number one pick. Since 1980 there are 6 players who've been selected as an outfielder at 18 years or even younger. Harper adds his name to an outstanding list. The Mets took Darryl Strawberry in 1980 and Shawn Abner in 1984. The Mariners took Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987 and the Rays took Josh Hamilton in 1999 and Delmon Young in 2003.

With exceptional ability and a strong outfield arm, the Washington Nationals are already looking at Harper as a number three hitter. Harper struck .443 with 31 homers and 98 RBIs in his first college season. He was behind home plate in college but the Washington Nationals are moving him the outfield where he can influence MLB odds. Harper played in the College of Southern Nevada which is a Junior College. He's now the biggest draft pick ever from a junior college.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had the second pick in the draft, and they picked Texas high school right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon. He was considered the most impressive pitcher in the draft. The team has not had a Cy Young Award-winner since Doug Drabek, yet another Texas native. They can only hope that they have the another one in Taillon, 18. The Baltimore Orioles took Florida high school shortstop Manny Machado as the 3rd pick in the draft. Machado has the chance to become the next superb shortstop in Baltimore, and be the next among a lineage that includes Miguel Tejada and, of course, Cal Ripken Jr. Cal State Fullerton shortstop Christian Colon, who was the 4th pick by the Royals, might be the most Major League ready player who might influence MLB lines first. The Kansas City Royals intend for him and 2 previous first-round picks - high school 3rd baseman Mike Moustakas and high school first baseman Eric Hosmer - to all arrive about the same time and create the infield that will help turn the long-suffering team around. Cleveland was next and so they took Mississippi left-hander Drew Pomeranz. Hopefully Pomeranz' experience with Cleveland will be superior than Stephen Head's.

The Washington Nationals want to put Harper in the field shortly but it may not be that simple. His agent is anticipated to be Scott Boras and that may mean trouble if the Washington Nationals do not want to spend big cash. Boras got Strasburg a four-year, $15.1 million deal last year. Harper claims he would like to play but he isn't against returning to Southern Nevada if necessary.
