Having lived the vast majority of my life in Johannesburg I think it may just be appropriate to share with you; some of my favourite ways to spend a Sunday afternoon. There should be something in here for everyone so read on.

The best place to lunch at is 4th Avenue, Parkhurst . For Sunday lunch, this is one of the trendiest locations in Johannesburg for Sunday lunch. Luckily this charismatic street has many eating establishments so there is no doubt you will find a table for lunch. Al fresco is the order of the day which is great in summer months and many restaurants have made provisions for winter months by creating enclosed spaces with street views so a comfortable dining experience is always guaranteed. The general standards and service in the street is very high indeed and one won’t be disappointed.

A wide variety of shops find themselves among the restaurants, from antiquities, designer home wares and clothing to art galleries, this street will not let the discerning shopper down. There’s always something alluring to see. 4th avenue finds itself in the midst of the older and more affluent suburbs of Johannesburg and is extremely well located for access to the old and new CBD’s of Johannesburg and Sandton respectively.

Next on my itinerary is a peaceful walk through the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens; a mere stone’s throw from Parkhurst. The gardens occupy a space of impressive dimensions and offer a variety of landscapes including my favourite - the rose gardens. This is a terraced rose garden with an ornate system of fountains, pools and ducts spanning every level. At the bottom of the rose gardens, an impressively large pool and fountain shooting water some 10 metres high in the air. On the eastern side of the gardens, Emmarentia Dam shares its edge with the botanicals and late afternoons are very pleasant and savourable. There are plenty of trees and large spaces which make a lot of places to enjoy a picnic. Johannesburg is one of the greenest cities in the world, and by enjoying a walk through the gardens in their entirety evidence of this will be come clear.

Lapa Fo restaurant has the largest veriety of pizzas in Johannesburg, very near to the gardens, it is located on 143 Barry Hertzog Avenure. It will take you years to come across a variety like this again. The owner of Lapa Fo - Percy, acquired his pizza-making skills in Sicily and then used them in London to assist opening a pizza restaurant, after successful endeavours there he returned to South Africa and opened Lapa Fo. Fusion and innovation is evident in every dish and the menu is centred around a continental theme. I recommend Lapa Fo to anyone with good taste an appreciation for a simplistic and homely venue.

These suburbs are all conveniently located in the Northern central Johannesburg suburbs . These locations are all located within 5 minutes of each other and a journey from Sandton Hotels will take 10 to 20 minutes. All establishments listed on Sandton accommodation have been star-graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa and are perfect to provide an equally comfortable stay which large anonymous hotels are able to provide you with.
