There are many businesses in Scotland and the UK but only the most successful ones will be recognized at the National Business Awards.

The economy around the world has had to face some particular challenges and obstacles when it comes to finances and viability. Not every business has been able to stay competitive or even keep their doors open.

In Scotland, this year there are some very successful businesses that are competing for the 2009 National Business Awards. The first award will be for The Orange Best Use of Technology in Business Award. The successful companies under consideration are Aberdeen College, beCogent Ltd., Cordia, Mercurytide, Onesearch Direct, and SynGro Ltd.

Being in business means different things to different people but one common denominator is that all are working to be successful at providing a particular product or service to the public and be the public’s preferred choice. This is true of entrepreneurs the same as corporate officers.

The Scotsman Entrepreneur of the Year Award contenders are Tracey Devine-Angels, Tony Banks-Balhousie Care Group, Dr. Rabinder Buttar-ClinTec International, Hannah Sutter-golower limited, Christian Arno-Lingo24 and Denice Purdie-Purdies The Scottish Soap Co.

Being a successful business in a challenged economy speaks volumes about the business. The Glasgow University Business Innovation of the Year Award achieves the same objective. Candidates for 2009 include Aquamarine Power, Clyde Valley Drilling Ltd., Flexlife, Kwik-Fit Insurance, Selex Galileo and The Town House Collection.

Because customers make the difference between whether or not a business is profitable or goes into bankruptcy, the right focus is paramount. The Hilton Customer Focus Award recognizes the business that is most successful and keeping that focus at the forefront. Candidates this year are Axa Insurance, Balhousie Care Group, Bright Grey-Edinburgh, Business Stream, Cattles Invoice Finance, Sykes Global Services, Inver House Distillers Ltd., Kwik-Fit Insurance, The Balmoral Hotel and Telefonica O2 UK Limited.

The media helps to build up business notoriety for better or for worse. The Symon Media Growth Strategy of the Year Award takes the high road for the best. Contenders this year are Churchill Drilling Tools, Fake Bake, IDE Group SgurrEnergy, STV Group and The Body Toning Clinic & Beauty Zone.

To receive The Business of the Year Award is to be recognized as a superior business that is successful beyond all others. The candidates in 2009 are Balhousie Care Group, Business Stream, MediaCom Scotlant, Petroleum Experts Ltd. And Selex Galileo-Edinburgh.

The ability to sustain employees and provide a work atmosphere that is enjoyable, productive, profitable and desirable are just a few of the qualities of those who compete for The Employer of the Year Award. In 2009, Angus College, Bellcom Ltd., Bright Grey, Business Stream, Cambell Dallas, Crieff Hydro Ltd., Glasgow Marriott Hotel, HLM Architects, Kwik-Fit Insurance and Selex Galileo are all candidates.

Businesses of all sizes make up the quintessential mix in Scotland and the UK but there is special recognition for The Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year due to the special needs these businesses fill. Award candidates for this category in 2009 include Churchill Drilling Tools, Flexlife-Aberdeen, Heritage Portfolio, IDE Group, Innis and Gunn, Maxymiser, Odin Consulting Engineers, SgurrEnergy, SynGro Ltd., and Totseat Limited.
