Our homes all run with boilers of varying types which we rely on for hot water and heating. These systems are taken for granted as they are safely tucked away in cupboards or the loft, providing an essential daily function but if they aren''t running at 100%, then we certainly get to know about it as the inconvenience causes all kinds of family frustations.

These days we all seem to be keeping a close watch on our carbon emissions therefore it''s a wise step to check to see if your boiler provides the right solution for your home, and when updating it what are the benefits in the long term.

The answer to the above is yes, there are definite benefits. Cost and ecology aside for one moment, there are alternative perhaps more immediate factors which have lead you to change. For example, it''s the inevitable a boiler upgrade you''ve been putting off for a while now but here''s some advice to help.

Making loft space is a very practical advantage to a boiler change, therefore you''d want to use a system which doesn''t use a storage cistern. If your mains water pressure is low then you wouldn''t necessarily find it practical converting to a combi boiler, but if you live in a flat or a bungalow where more space is always appreciated, it''s certainly an option worth considering.

Regular Boilers provide hot water from the mains feeding it to the central heating and the cylinder. The cylinder provides a useful extra fucntion as it is a very useful to have an airing cupboard. The loft based storage cistern has an expansion cistern close by, taking up that much sought after extra loft space. Upkeep is required and can prove costly should problems arise as many are old and worn.

System Boilers work on the same convention as regular boilers of having a stored water tank, but work in a more efficient way with a faster response time. Economically speaking it is cheaper to run too, and does not rely on the expansion system either. If you have a property with 2 or more bathrooms then a system boiler or a regular one would be the most appropriate.

Unlike system and regular boilers, combi boilers, which amount to over half of all new boiler installations, have excellent space saving properties and are more energy efficient too. Installation is easier than with the above 2 options as there is less hardware to install, and lower labour costs to be spending out on.

With combi boilers pumps are generally not needed either as water is mains pressure delivered but if the pressure in your area is low then you may want to look at alternative systems. Whatever your current set-up, it may be worth have a look to see what''s available.
