Companies that do roof repair in Toronto have it tough. There are few places that experience the same extremes in temperature and climate as Toronto. From searing summer highs to chilled winter lows, Toronto gets it all and local roofing repair companies have to deal with it.

Toronto’s average daily highs in January are just below freezing, which makes roof shingles shrink and become more brittle. Under these conditions, roof repair should only be done in emergencies.

Summer temperatures in Toronto can be over 30 degrees Celsius for extended periods. Those temperatures make roof tiles expand and become more pliable. In the summer, the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures can be 10 degrees or more. All year-round, Toronto is a place where roofs need to endure major temperature fluctuations, which makes roof repair a common practice.

But how does temperature fluctuation have an effect on roofing repairs in Toronto. It’s not so much that there is a wide range in temperatures, but it’s the range that Toronto experiences. In winter, temperatures might be well below freezing in the evenings, but get up to just above freezing during the day. In that temperature range, snow deposits on roofs melt a little during the day and freeze in the evenings. Each time there is a freeze-thaw cycle, it wears on the shingles of your roof, increasing the chance of repairs later on. In places that are warmer than Toronto, there are fewer or no freeze-thaw cycles. The same is true for places that are colder than Toronto – temperatures stay below freezing more consistently and reduce the damaging freeze-thaw cycles – and roofing repair. Toronto enjoys relatively mild winters compared to many other parts of Canada, but Toronto’s roofs pay for it in increased need for repair.

The story is similar in summer months. Scorching highs, especially on roofs that are angled toward the sun, make roofing tiles expand more than at normal temperatures. But Toronto’s climate means that, even during times of relatively high daytime temperatures, evening temperatures can be quite low. Within a few hours, roofing tiles can go through as much expansion and contraction as they are designed to handle. While the tiles themselves can take the temperature variance, repeated expansion cycles, over many summers, can have an effect on roof mounting hardware, like nails, which might loosen sooner than if there were fewer expansion cycles.

So, it could be said, when it comes to roofing repair, Toronto is in no position to avoid them. However, homeowners can take steps to reduce roof repair and make their roofs last a little longer. The secret is in learning how to spot the conditions that could increase the need for repairs. Another trick is to learn the signs that repairs may be needed because it’s far easier to repair a roof than fix the damage caused when roof repairs are not done.

A common happening on Toronto roofs during winter, and one that is the source of a lot of roof damage and repair, is ice-damming. Ice damming happens when snow and ice on your roof melts due to escaping heat from your home. As it melts, it slides down the incline of your roof to the eaves trough. Eaves are usually on roof over-hangs that don’t get the as much heat from your home as the rest of the roof. In the temperature range that Toronto experiences, this means the over hang can be at freezing temperatures, while the rest of the roof is not. It leads to refreezing of the snow and ice at, and just above, the eaves trough. The block of ice can grow through the winter months because it stops water from draining off the roof. That water and ice can back up, get under your roof shingles and cause problems inside your home. Just another situation where Toronto’s climate can lead to more roof repair.

Fortunately, there are ways to stop ice damming and spot other signs that your roof needs maintenance or attention. While we don’t often think of our roof until there’s a problem, to avoid additional roof repair, Toronto homeowners should keep an eye on the temperature.
