Mobile Weighing Systems

Because mobile weighing systems have not been around for a very long time, there is a limited variety compared with other weighing systems, which have had more time on the market to evolve and invite competition. Mobile weighing systems are those which are used to weigh loads carried by trucks or trailers.

During the time these loads are being transported, there is a frequent need to weigh the contents, especially when contents are being added or deducted. In most cases, these systems are used to weigh the specific contents while they are still in place on the truck or trailer. For this reason, it is necessary that any device used to weigh such loads be easy to transport. In addition, the scale must also be able to account for or deduct any weight which might not be directly associated with the contents it is meant to weigh. Beyond these requirements, there may be other factors which can affect the read weight of a load such as tilt of the road or an uneven surface. The most sophisticated measuring systems are able to account for these factors as well.

While there is not a vast array of options when it comes to mobile weighing systems, there are a few different choices to consider. It should be mentioned before getting more in-depth with this subject that when saying that a specific system is “trade approved,” it means that it has met the standards set by the National Type Evaluation Program for legal use in trade. The most basic of these is a simple pallet truck scale. Being the most basic, it is also relatively low in cost.

There are several trade approved versions of pallet truck scales available. In addition, these systems are not difficult to use and maneuver, and as a result, require minimal training. They also take up very little space when it comes to storage of equipment, which in some cases provides a great advantage. On the downside of this system, it has a limited weight capacity, is not as resilient as other similar measurement systems, and requires manual effort by the person needing to weigh the load.

For many, a better solution is what is called a “hydraulic onboard weighing system.” Not only are these systems very cost effective, they are also easy to maintain. These systems are about the size of a GPS unit you would use in your car, and can be moved from truck to truck in a matter of seconds. They require no manual labor of the person trying to weigh a load, and are also able to easily add or deduct changes in load weight very quickly. In addition, this device can account for changes in lifting attachments and load centers, therefore maintaining the accuracy of its measurements. However, with all of the positive aspects of this system, there is a downside, which is that this device is not yet trade approved.
