When the economic environment changes for a country, as ours has over these past few years, certain decisions change in individuals lives. Paths that people were usually one-hundred percent sure about, all of a sudden, don't offer the same assurances they once did. This brings me to my question, or, point if you will. Given our country's present economic environment, does serving in a branch of the armed forces offer more benefits than pursuing a college education?

Now, of course the pros and cons can be argued on both sides, and in being argued, many different factors, events, and individuals can come in to play, but for the sake of this discussion, I'm more so speaking about the face-value of each choice. In other words, just going with the obvious factors (granted they will vary across each individual), such as time, money, and the end goal of each path which is the better option in today's economy?

Most college students spend anywhere from 3-5 years, completing their universities requirements for a Bachelor's degree. Once this is completed, the student usually enters the workforce, and begins to move up the corporate ladder. After college, an individual may also choose to further their education, via several different options.

For the armed forces, a recruit enters boot camp (the longest of which is the Marine Corps Boot Camp, and it is 13 weeks long), and once they have completed boot camp, they choose a career field they would like to pursue within the military. They also have to choice of being transferred to a unit, to where they can start getting hands-on training and experience in their chosen field.

Now, we all know one of the main factors that works against individuals choosing to go to the military, and that is the obvious risks that come along with enlisting, when combat situations are at hand. There is no sugar coating it, there is a chance you will be put in a life-threatening situation, and there is a possibility that you may lose your life. If a person can come to understand and accept this, then the benefits of the military are extensive.

When a person joins the military, they begin getting paid while they are going through basic training. This is completely different from the students who would otherwise be paying money, instead of receiving money. Also, the military has a lot of programs that help people with healthcare, buying a home, and getting a college education. Another great benefit is that individuals with experience in the military are usually considered first for many jobs that are available.

Of course there are many more benefits to joining the military as well, but with these benefits mentioned, and those we know about pursuing a college education, which do you feel is the best choice for a person to make in today's economy?
